The Chartbusters played the Brewer Auditorium in Maine, largely on the strength of the band's chart hit, "She's the One." It was my introduction to this Washington DC outfit. The YouTube caption says, "This group was one of the inspirations for the movie, 'That Thing You Do.'" "Why (Doncha Be My Girl)" was the next [Chartbusters] single. Romantic difficulties seems to have emerged as a theme.

"She's the One" charted in August 1964, reaching No. 33 and remaining on the Billboard Top 40 for three weeks.

By the way, the vocal on "That Thing You Do" was performed by ex-Bostonian Mike Viola.

DANNY GATTON
"BLUES NEWBURG"

Fast, accurate, and played with feeling, as done in some passages here, is a rare combination; but then, Danny Gatton was a rare player. The tune, itself, is relatively slow. Contrast what you hear on this track with the franticness of "Fingers on Fire" on his "Unfinished Business" album.

Danny Gatton was one of my all-time favorite guitarists, matching talent with nimble fingers. For some more of his picking, search Mastodon on the dannygattor hashtag.

This is an unusual listening experience but you probably got that from the title. The track comes from Gatton's big album, "99 Elmira St." Some cuts on the record have too much band but it seems to me the production got it about right in this crazy case. Danny Gatton is easily one of my all-time favorite guitarists and it is great to hear him at his peak. For some more of his playing, search Mastodon on the dannygatton hashtag.

It is worth adding that Danny Gatton's idol was my fellow Maine native, Lenny Breau.

"In MY Room" is from Danny Gatton's big album, "88 Elmira St." His performance on this track is faithful and pretty subdued: - not typical of his usually aggressive recordings. It gets a little wilder during the fade out. "A little wilder" and "fade out"? Don't expect to get overwhelmed. Still, it is very nice and well worth waiting for. Danny Gatton was not one to disappoint. For more of his picking, search Mastodon on the dannygatton hashtag.
