The appeal of this various artists collection is not limited to Cher fans. "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)," for instance, is a great rock 'n' roll oldie covered by Cher. It is ably covered here, in turn, by Sheila E. I listened to Cher's recording of "Take Me Home" and pretty much decided against this song. Then I listened to the Anita Pointer performance anyway, on this tribute album, and bought it. My suggestion is to give this collection a listen and decide for yourself.

"Nothin' Shakin' (But the Leaves on the Trees)" is a real classic rock 'n' roll oldie. The Beatles (Paul McCartney, it seems to me) used to perform this song at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, in the band's formative years.

Eddie Fontaine was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, which is the nearest large city to here.

My digital download copy gives Fontaine's name as Eddy Fontaine.

The Chartbusters played the Brewer Auditorium in Maine, largely on the strength of the band's chart hit, "She's the One." It was my introduction to this Washington DC outfit. The YouTube caption says, "This group was one of the inspirations for the movie, 'That Thing You Do.'" "Why (Doncha Be My Girl)" was the next [Chartbusters] single. Romantic difficulties seems to have emerged as a theme.

"She's the One" charted in August 1964, reaching No. 33 and remaining on the Billboard Top 40 for three weeks.

By the way, the vocal on "That Thing You Do" was performed by ex-Bostonian Mike Viola.

This is the earliest Boston rock 'n' roll hit record coming to mind.* It was taped at Boston's Ace Recording Studios, charting in September 1957 and ultimately reaching Billboard's No. 5 position, charting for 14 weeks. It went to No. 4 and remained for 11 weeks on Billboard's Rhythm and Blues chart.

* I have since recalled that the G-Clefs charted with "Ka-Ding Dong" in September 1956.
