RINGO STARR

A John Lennon full length interview for a men's magazine was on United States newsstands right up to about the time he died. That piece was the thing that convinced me Lennon, one of the world's great trash talkers, nonetheless really admired Ringo Starr. While this is nothing like an exact quote, the spirit of what Lennon said was this. When Ringo joined The Beatles, he was already a big star in our hometown. Between his music and his acting, Ringo was going to make it big with or without The Beatles. There was more. Ringo had great organizational skills. We saw it yesterday. All around the world he had Ringo Starr "Peace and Love" birthday celebrations. In the time I have been with Facebook, I've never seen anything like it, not even following the death of the great Brian Wilson. One post after another post after another in Ringo's honor. Face it, the world loves Ringo Starr.

My favorite passage in this video short is Ringo telling about watching The Beatles from a front seat at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, and requesting songs. Ringo may have been the ultimate Beatles fan.

We had nothing quite like The Remains until this band came along. Widely known for loudness - loudest band I ever heard was a common expression - The Remains ought to be at least as well known for tightness. One of the bootlegs had a track that, no doubt, was not intended for the public to hear. Vern's bass started out too loud, Barry's vocal was a little tentative. It sounded to me like a song they had just reworked and they recorded it promptly to get the arrangement down for reference in future sessions. Then they came to the refrain and the four just hammered it in really close formation. They transformed instantly from four guys working out a song to THE REMAINS ready to take on the world. It was a terrific thing to hear. Some of the available film footage shows a young Vern Miller characteristically hopping about on stage and Barry answering with hops of his own. "Remains Nights" at the early-1960s incarnation of The Rat were where Boston's highly productive rock scene got its start. When Chip Damiani left the band in the lead-up to the Beatles tour, The Remains added a remarkable drummer, ND Smart II. ND was subsequently in a John Hall group, Kangaroo; and then he was in one of my all-time favorite bands, The Great Speckled Bird with Ian and Sylvia. Chip is the drummer The Remains wanted but the band, nonetheless, aced the percussion position with ND, easily one of the very best drummers I ever heard live. Bill Briggs, as The Remains tech guy, was a big part of the band's success. The best equipment and knowing stage set-up were fundamental to what made these four musicians The Remains. This was a highly professional, focused band with what Nancy Neon calls "garage spirit." "Ticket To Ride" by Barry Tashian is one of New England rock history's essential books. A music store in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, displayed a collage made up of various newspaper headlines and notices, each in its own way speaking of The Remains blowing The Beatles off stage. It was great! RiP Chip Damiani.

MICK TAYLOR
ACCORDING TO GUITAR PILGRIM

Can You Play This Riff? Ep. 33 Mick Taylor [The Rolling Stones]
Guitar Pilgrim [Thom Helwig]

"Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out"-era Mick Taylor with a little Keith Richards thrown in. We also get a better idea of the number of faces Guitar Pilgrim can make. Pilgrim is very popular. He posted this video just two hours ago and he already has 117 thumbs up.

ROD ARGENT UPDATE
Mastodon Post

The main updates on Rod Argent of The Zombies and the band, Argent, so far, are mostly coming from social media. They agree that Argent has decided to retire from touring. It is my hope more extensive reporting will follow. This seems to be all we have at the moment.

The Zombies has been one of my favorite rock bands since "She's Not There." I compile various artists music collections; and the one I am working on right now ends with The Zombies' "You've Really Got a Hold On Me," which is actually a medley with Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home to Me."

Rod Argent's "Time of the Season," by The Zombies, has long been a favorite on paranormal radio. Can't talk much about The Zombies without naming the masterpiece, "Summertime."

The Zombies is one of my all-time favorite rock bands. Much as I love all the members, with special regard to Colin Blunstone, there would be no Zombies without Rod Argent. Get well, buddy!

THE BARBARIANS

Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl?
The Barbarians - Topic

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHrqEEzagVo

One of my favorite features on one of my favorite radio stations is Corny O'Connell's "Question of the Day" on WFUV out of New York City. This morning's question had to do with hair. My suggestion was "Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl" by The Barbarians. "With your long blonde hair You look like a girl." It pleases me to say Corny went with it. This track never made the Billboard Top 40 but its memory outlived many records that did. The Barbarians laid some claim to being the first punk band. It definitely came with a garage punk quality. WFUV has a very large audience stretching through a big part of the United States and probably abroad. It is easy to access through its excellent mobile app.

SWALLOW
"SOMETHING STARTED HAPPENING"
Mastodon Post

Swallow. Something Started Happening.
-GreasyGrooves- Deep Cuts 1969-79.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jusrP0v3Lrs

Swallow made two major label albums. Since the band played music that was very popular at the time, it is surprising Swallow did not go even further. Vern Miller was in The Remains, the quartet that Boston's 1960s rock scene gathered around. A Music Museum of New England article says that George Leh was in a seminal outfit, the J Geils Blues Band: - a thing I did not remember.

Not every track captures the essence of this band but "Something Started Happening" is quite good.

Searching YouTube on "Swallow" is an adventure. I found a mass of videos about swallowing and choking disorders and really didn't get anywhere until I dropped the band's name and searched, instead, on "Something Started Happening."
