iamBullivantTom Barry was born on 1st July 1897 Killorglin, County Kerry. He was a prominent guerrilla leader in the IRA during the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. He is remembered for the Kilmichael ambush, in which he and his column wiped out a 18-man patrol, killing sixteen. He continued to be part of the IRA after the civil war and served as its commander-in-chief in 1937, during which he opened contacts with Nazi Germany.

After his pivotal military failure in America, he eventually ended up in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham as Commander-in-Chief of Crown forces in Ireland. The most brutal thing about the Irish Free State's refusal of a proper pension to Thomas Bryan's widow is that they did not properly investigate her claim that he had been at the terrible fight around Clanwilliam House, Mount Street, in the 1916 Easter Rising, and refused her a 1916-connected pension.
