The 19th Century #engineers, our forebears, overbuilt their products, because the #mathematical techniques, though already fully mature and accurate, were not as precise, due to the use of the #SlideRule. In the second half of the 20th Century, my generation of engineers did their best to exploit the powers of #computing to lengthen MTBF and to extend product lives.

In the 21st Century, though, engineering seems to have become obsessed with the use of #AI and other advanced computing technologies to predict accurately and precisely when products will fail, so as to aid the actuaries set the #warranties that expire just before the products fail.

#Engineering is a licensed profession with its own regulations and ethical codes. Unlike businessmen, we must not permit ourselves to kneel at the alter of profits.

This family's #lawsuit is wishful thinking. #Google's terms of service (#ToS) is very clear about their #services being offered as-is, without any sort of expressed or implied #warranties as to the #accuracy of information provided. I don't see how they can establish that Google had an #obligation to provide #accurate information, and that they are due #damages as a result of inaccuracy in the content provided.
