@bitzero i went to uni in the late 70s to early 80s, & i was in the opposing camp... i chose to swap my hitherto #sliderule for a TI-59, with its dinky little magnetic cards & internal motor, + #RPN also, ofc. several of my friends also bought the same one, though one went for the TI-58. other friends did go the HP route, specifically the HP-41C iirc. fun times.
Dad showed me his slide rule today. This thing is probably 50-60 years old. It's German, a brand called Aristo-Elektro.

I'm in love with the fonts and colours. Few things are as classy lately.
