Just officially unsubscribed from the #vidcon newsletter. I have some decent memories of the con, but it's just been useless and not worth the expenditure for me for the most part, especially as they cater more and more to "capitalism friendly" creators only while ones like me will forever be ignored.
I'm also just not young anymore, and don't have an interest in influencer-y type content or appealing to the "screaming jump cut" crowd. Nor will I ever make it to the "glitterati influencer elite" class because my content will never be promoted by the mainstream platforms like theirs is so I can never get "famous" (nor would I necessarily want to, if it means stymieing me from discussing the important political topics I want to discuss). So the only Vidcon content available to me is that directed towards children, which sorry, I just don't give a shit about waiting in line for over an hour in the exhibit hall so I can buy $40 aphmau plushies.
Unfortunately there aren't really any more adult-based (not sex, just not meant-for-children) #contentCreator conventions that don't cost, like, $700+ for a ticket (that are still oriented towards capitalism-friendly creators, even then) so I probably won't ever be able to meet other content creators face to face again. But at least this means not having to stress about finding a hotel, dog sitter, etc. every year (not to mention how to justify the expense).
I'll just keep screaming at the patriarchy in my little corner of the decentralized internet where no one (okay, like, ten people) can find it, and hope that I can galvanize at least those ten people to acknowledge and speak out about the same important issues, including but not limited to topless gender equality 🤷♀️
