Just officially unsubscribed from the #vidcon newsletter. I have some decent memories of the con, but it's just been useless and not worth the expenditure for me for the most part, especially as they cater more and more to "capitalism friendly" creators only while ones like me will forever be ignored.

I'm also just not young anymore, and don't have an interest in influencer-y type content or appealing to the "screaming jump cut" crowd. Nor will I ever make it to the "glitterati influencer elite" class because my content will never be promoted by the mainstream platforms like theirs is so I can never get "famous" (nor would I necessarily want to, if it means stymieing me from discussing the important political topics I want to discuss). So the only Vidcon content available to me is that directed towards children, which sorry, I just don't give a shit about waiting in line for over an hour in the exhibit hall so I can buy $40 aphmau plushies.

Unfortunately there aren't really any more adult-based (not sex, just not meant-for-children) #contentCreator conventions that don't cost, like, $700+ for a ticket (that are still oriented towards capitalism-friendly creators, even then) so I probably won't ever be able to meet other content creators face to face again. But at least this means not having to stress about finding a hotel, dog sitter, etc. every year (not to mention how to justify the expense).

I'll just keep screaming at the patriarchy in my little corner of the decentralized internet where no one (okay, like, ten people) can find it, and hope that I can galvanize at least those ten people to acknowledge and speak out about the same important issues, including but not limited to topless gender equality 🤷‍♀️

@tofu I mean the non-transferability of tickets and account requirement may be a problem unless it's explicitly a B2B-only event. At least in any.juristiction with consumer protection laws...

  • Obviously their ToS could still bar users and they could just reject people at the door and refund them on the spot unless they get kicked out for misbehaviour...

Either way it has #VidCon #vibes.

I've got 11 months (assuming the world doesn't end before the next #vidcon ) to try to find someone to go with that
1. isn't going to be creepy about the fact that I'm a topfree equality activist
2. doesn't freak out in crowds
3. gets up earlier than 3pm usually
4. has the free time to go down to Anaheim with me for a week in June
5. has at least some experience holding a camera without it looking like shit

I only have two friends that are even remotely close to meeting this criteria...one I met at previous Vidcons and she'd probably be great at all of it, except that she's a talent manager so she's always busy running around networking and going to panels more aligned with her interests, and the other friend...doesn't do well with crowds, and struggles to maintain anything close to a "normal person" sleep schedule, instead usually waking up at 3pm or later and going to bed around 7 in the morning.... 🙃

Ugh... I'm trying to write a script for my #vidcon 2025 recap and review, but I'm really struggling to come up with pros to balance out all the cons 😭

Mashable: Haliey Welch recorded ‘Talk Tuah’ in front of a live audience at VidCon. It got messy.. “Haliey Welch, better known as ‘Hawk Tuah’ girl, continues to be followed by controversy at VidCon 2025. During a live recording of her podcast Talk Tuah Thursday night, which she co-hosts with her friend Chelsea Bradford, Welch and guest Whitney Cummings quickly lost the attention of the crowd.”

Mashable: VidCon 2025: YouTube legends Hank Green, Rosanna Pansino, and Dr. Pimple Popper reflect on how the platform has changed. “YouTube isn’t the same website it was 20 years ago, and creators Hank Green, Rosanna Pansino, and Dr. Sandra Lee (aka Dr. Pimple Popper) know that better than most. The three creators, who have been on the platform for 18, 15, and 14 years, respectively, […]
