It's just that "#AlwaysOnlineDRM" is more of a malware and hinderance than anything.

• #CCSS vendors / publishers should not haggle me post-payment/installation, for it is none of their business how, when and where and what for I use their Software.
  • Their interests have to cease at the initial, one-time-only license check.

With #FLOSS this issue just doesn't exist. Worst-case a distro like #Debian will remind me to 'please get some updates' but not only can I tell it to 'shut up, and never ask me again' but I can even update it as an airgapped system from a burned disc, external drive or NAS.

• And believe me, folks like @fuchsiii who were stuck on #56k until the 2010s already faced that problem.

Similarly, I think #FrugalComputing has it's merits and I'd love to see more things like @violenceworks 's #VT69 terminal…

• Maybe something with like a #RaspberryPi, keyboard and an #eInk screen…

So yeah, even if anything beyond the minimalist 1440kB Floppy is quite bigger, being able to #reproduce a system and have #ReproduceableBuilds is in my eyes the only way to get enough #trust so #CriticalInfrastructure providers would consider it even remotely for use.

And that's why I use #toybox: Because the motivations align with those of @landley and I also want counter-#FUD decisionmakers by showing them:

"This is what I'd use to administrate your critical #Linux / #BSD / #Unix servers. You don't have to trust me, here's the code that you can build it yoursef - airgapped and inhouse - and it WILL exceed any security and auditability criteria you can create that any other OS can comply with!"

Not to mention a compact system can just yoink itself into RAM and just be available for tasking, making #ThinClient updates super fast and easy to facilitate across machines, preventing any persistence of malicious code or unauthorized access beyond reboot...

Basically the #VT69 dumb terminal but over #SSH and thus way more practical!

Personally, my current pet project - @OS1337 - is inspired by @landley 's #mkroot and @w84death 's #Floppinux in that I want to not just make a simple #Linux distro 'from scratch' as a personal "#demoscene-esque" challenge but to answer the question:

"What is the amallest possible yet still useable Distro I can build with which I (as Linux-#Sysadmin] can still #work?"

• And I came to the conclusion that I can basically do everything from an #SSH #terminal similar to the #VT69 by @violenceworks but like as #distro.

OFC that idea grew on me as I wanted to make something that is actually useable with just an 80x25 MDA or serial console...

It's still very rough around the edges, but you can just run it from a 1440kB 3,5" FDD on an i486SX and up with at least 16MB of RAM...
