Very very happy to see this shopping cart and gravel bar in the stream today. Last summer the cart was there, but the gravel bar was not. Did our trail camera capture the bar being built? We’ll find out when we analyze the photos we downloaded today! #FieldPhotoFriday #FieldWorkFriday #FieldWork #Geomorphology #GravelBar #trashyStreams #ChannelChange #UrbanStreams #Cleveland
This week’s #52LakeChamplain view is of Potash Brook, Burlington’s urban stream. Though you can’t tell from this picture, the stream runs under and through many of the Burlington area’s residential and commercial districts, and an interstate is just up the hill out of frame to the right. This special spot is in UVM’s East Woods Natural Area and I look forward to excuses to revisit this lovely #urban #stream for #research and #teaching. #LakeChamplainBasin #Vermont #BurlingtonVT #UrbanStreams
Finally, the same stream back to its usual level. #BayAreaStreams #UrbanStreams #BayAreaFlooding
#SelfPromotionSaturday is a thing here? Ok, I’m giving a webinar on my research on #TrashyStreams on Wednesday and it’s free and open for anyone interested in #geomorphology of #UrbanStreams or #PlasticPollution. Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: AGU EPSP Connects Science Talk by Dr. Anne Jefferson. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.

Title: The geomorphic context of litter in urban streams Abstract: Litter can enter urban streams by multiple pathways, but what happens to it once it is in the water? Using a dataset drawn from 25 stream reaches in two US cities, this seminar will explore where litter is found and how that distribution is related to the watershed, reach, and localized geomorphic characteristics. We will look at how material characteristics alter where litter gets trapped and the potential litter has to alter the surrounding environment. Short Bio: Dr. Anne Jefferson is a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Kent State University in Ohio. Her research focuses on the hydrology and geomorphology of human-altered landscapes, with a current emphasis on stormwater management and plastic pollution.

For #FieldPhotoFriday, here I am at Kelsey Creek in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. This photo is from early March 2020, when I was working on a manuscript from a student’s MS thesis which included this site. One pandemic lab shutdown, a baby, & several new projects later, I’m not sure the paper will ever happen. But the #WaterQuality data the thesis contains has been useful to the city as they work to restore and protect their #UrbanStreams.

TLDR: pubs are not the only way to have an impact #academic
