Surveying stream beds (and trash) earlier this week. I can’t wait to see how the surveys compare to the ones we did last summer, because my eyes tell me there were some changes at most of our sites. #FieldWorkFriday #FieldPhotoFriday #urbanStream #TrashyStreams
Very very happy to see this shopping cart and gravel bar in the stream today. Last summer the cart was there, but the gravel bar was not. Did our trail camera capture the bar being built? We’ll find out when we analyze the photos we downloaded today! #FieldPhotoFriday #FieldWorkFriday #FieldWork #Geomorphology #GravelBar #trashyStreams #ChannelChange #UrbanStreams #Cleveland

@annejefferson

Oh I can imagine that you must find so much more. There's always another thing to pick up anywhere- even here in VT.

I'm new to masto and I am just discovering all kinds of cool people on here. That's how I found you and your work!

Loving going through your #TrashyStreams tag and I'm going to check out the recording from that talk you gave in Nov.

@circuitsunfish Thank you too! And yes, I should have emphasized how much less plastic I found than I have in my #TrashyStreams work in other states. Appreciating #Vermont's commitment to the #environment. A big part of why I moved here.
Despite a #Vermont statewide ban on #plastic #bags and single-use #styrofoam, I still picked up both. The bag was of course wrapped around some branches in the #stream, while the very fresh looking styrofoam may have come from a cooler and was busy creating secondary #microplastics along the edge of the parking lot. #GreenUpDay #litter #PlasticPollution #TrashyStreams
Our family participated in our first #GreenUpDay, a #Vermont tradition. We picked up #litter in our neighborhood park and stream, both of which were already very clean. Our haul was mostly #plastic, with the most common items being cigarette #butts and #wrappers. Our biggest retrieval was this #bike frame, but I had to leave behind several large items partially buried in rocks and sediment in the streambed and a #tire with a tree growing through it. #GreenUp #PlasticPollution #TrashyStreams

Urban #trashystreams mostly suffer from #PlasticPollution, but can also be affected by Pasta Pollution?!

This story out of #NewJersey highlights the continuing problem of illegal #dumping (or mismanaged waste) especially in areas with inadequate and costly disposal services. And the problem is small in the US relative to the developing world.

We did definitely make the best of the hot weather. Saturday afternoon saw the family exploring our local #stream. Followed by ice cream, naturally. #Vermont #SummerWeather

P.S. Disappointing to see multiple pieces of trash in the neighborhood stream. #TrashyStreams

There's a new hobby in Baltimore, fishing hunks of metal out of the Chesapeake Bay with magnets

Magnet fishers are bringing up scooters, lawn chairs and even a gun from the harbor waters.

First up, Annika Dudik will share her #NSFfunded #REU work on plastic distribution in an urban stream and floodplain. She's presenting our first true #microplastics data, along with a lot of #macroplastic #trashystreams data. Here's a sneak preview of her poster. #plasticpollution #AGU22
