Ubuntu 20.04 LTS enters ESM

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa was released on April 23rd, 2020, to give you an improved desktop experience. Since then, newer versions of Ubuntu, including Ubuntu 25.04 Plucky Puffin, were released to further improve the desktop environment and to enhance user experience.

We are sad to announce that Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa has reached the end of standard support, which means that there will be no more package updates to be accepted to the main Ubuntu 20.04 package archives. This happened as of May 29th, 2025, when it was announced a month ago that this was the final date.

Canonical has started the Extended Security Maintenance (ESM) program for Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa by extending the support date for security updates up to April 2030, further enhanced with the legacy support that spans two more years, which means April 2032. You can check the release cycle here.

In order to benefit from extra 5 years of security maintenance support, you’ll have to have a Ubuntu Pro subscription tied to your Ubuntu One account that your computer uses.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS extended security maintenance begins soon

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa was released on April 23rd, 2020. The official release cycle policy has offered support for this version of Ubuntu from April 2020, and will continue to be offered under the main support policy until May 2025.

Starting May 29th, 2025, the extended security maintenance will start, just like how all LTS releases end their main support that lasts for five years. All LTS releases starting from Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr will have three support durations, just like how it’s scheduled for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS:

  • LTS standard security maintenance for Ubuntu Main: April 23rd, 2020 – May 29th, 2025
  • Expanded Security Maintenance: May 29th, 2025 – April 2030
  • LTS Expanded Security Maintenance (ESM) for Ubuntu Universe: April 23rd, 2020 – April 2030
  • Legacy support: April 2030 – April 2032

However, ESM support requires you to have the Ubuntu Pro subscription under your Ubuntu One account. You can find the announcement below:

Security patching this on @linuxmint machines at work and listening to @LateNightLinux and patched #Ubuntu #UbuntuLTS #Ubuntu2004 #Ubuntu2004LTS #Ubuntu2204 #Ubuntu2204LTS earlier and did listen to Säkerhetspodcasten #security #säkerhet #sakpodcasten before its time for lunch and to relax rest of the afternoon

So I ended up putting my primary laptop's old 500GB SSD drive into my other laptop that had a 500GB HDD. Before that, I wanted to update everything and make sure there were no issues before the swap. This laptop is a dual boot with #Windows10 and #Ubuntu.

I haven't really used it in a long time (at least 1 year or more) and both OSes were way behind with updates. Windows took over a day to download and install all the updates. I then decided to upgrade my #Ubuntu1804LTS #BionicBeaver to #Ubuntu2204LTS #JammyJellyfish.

First, I had to upgrade to #Ubuntu2004LTS #FocalFossa. Everything went pretty smoothly. I just couldn't download via CLI. It kept saying "packages not found." I was able to use the updater via the GUI, however.

So after that, the old SSD from the primary laptop is in and there is of course a nice performance boost. Windows still isn't great since it only has the stock 4GB of RAM, unlike my primary that I boosted up to 12GB of RAM, but it's plenty for Ubuntu. I'll probably keep that as my main Linux system/backup for if the primary laptop goes out on me.

Mein #Lehrerdienstgerät hat jetzt erfolgreich #linux transplantiert bekommen, daher ist mein #lenovo #thinkpad #x1 #yoga #gen4 abzugeben. Ist ein #dualboot mit #Windows10 und #Ubuntu2004LTS
