Thinking of getting a refurbished Dell or Lenovo laptop to run linux on. Mostly to organise and process photos, but also some light CAD. I'll probably look for a laptop with 32gb ram.

The question is how much I should consider processor generation? Should I avoid laptops that are older than 11th gen intel processors?
Gen 9 and 10 are considerably cheaper, but I would like the computer to last a couple of years.

We're exploring ideas and would love your input!

Our current StarFighter laptop (Intel 285H, 64GB RAM, 4K 16" screen) comes in at around £1700 ex VAT.

We're thinking about offering a lower-spec model as well - less memory, a slightly slower processor and a lower-resolution screen - with a price point of around £1200 ex VAT.

Would that be of interest to you?

Let us know what you think!

I've been looking at my toolset and trying my best to lessen my dependency on Apple for hardware and the ecosystem for my day-to-day. My issues with waiting for a proper Linux laptop to surface are still there but until I either break down and buy a Framework 16 or something else comes along i've been palling around with an old Thinkpad P52s running Fedora/Gnome. Surprisingly, i'm impressed with Fedora and with some minor modifications to Gnome, it's relatively usable. My dislike for Gnome shell is waning and using Javascript for configuration annoys me but otherwise it's usable on an almost 6 year old laptop. Librewolf and vertical tabs are nice, nvim setup is working well and even with this age it handles my main benq rd320ua well enough. There are still some issues that annoy me, long gone are the days of working on configuration or writing patches to make things just right but toolset wise, not bad. #gnome #fedora #linuxlaptop #librewolf

If, like me, you have been struggling to enable hibernation on your #TuxedoOS machine after the latest major update, this answer on AskUbuntu will be very useful to you : https://askubuntu.com/a/1536224.

Basically, Ubuntu 24.04 needs a different Polkit configuration in order for #kde to show the relevant button in the launcher.

Everything else is the same as described here https://www.reddit.com/r/tuxedocomputers/comments/17ai79z/how_to_enable_hibernation_in_tuxedo_os_encrypted/

Hibernate from command line works, but not from menu

I have recently installed Lubuntu 24.04 on an old Dell laptop (it was previously running Windows 7!). I have followed instructions to enable hibernate, and sudo systemctl hibernate works just fine...

Well, the issue was that I had a bad disk partitioning. I deleted all the partitions with #Gparted and it was smooth sailing. I decided not to use LVM because the SSD is relatively small (240GB) and I don't plan to move or resize partitions, but maybe I should reconsider because of snapshots.

Anyway, I'll be checking how it works and will post if I decide to reinstall again 😅.

System76 Pangolin Linux Laptop now available with Ryzen 9 8945HS and up to 96GB RAM

The System76 Pangolin is a thin, light, and powerful laptop with a big screen, an AMD processor, and a choice of GNU/Linux distributions including Ubuntu and Pop!_OS. Linux PC company System76 has been selling versions of the Pangolin laptop since 2020, and this week the company introduced a new model with an AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS Hawk Point processor and support for up to 96GB of RAM and up to 16TB of storage.

It’s available for purchase now with prices starting at $1299 for a 16GB/500GB configuration.

Earlier this year System76 released a version of the Pangolin laptop with a Ryzen 7 7840U processor, a 16.1 inch display, and 32GB of LPDDR5 memory.

The new model brings a number of improvements. It has a higher-power processor, a higher-resolution display with a faster refresh rate, user-upgradeable memory, a better camera, and a slightly lighter weight. But it’s also a downgrade in at least one area – the new model has a smaller battery than its predecessor. It also has a higher starting price.

Here’s how the latest Pangolin stacks up against its predecessor:
