An acre of land given back to the Tongva tribe was in the path of the Eaton fire - it’s too early to assess all the damage, but by replacing 97 eucalyptus with 50 native oaks they may have saved the property

For many years, the Santa Monica Mountains sustained the #Chumash and #Tongva / #Gabrielino cultures.
Sycamore Canyon, which cuts through }#Rancho #Sierra #Vista/Satwiwa and #Point #Mugu State Park, was part of a Chumash trade route.
#Satwiwa, which means "the bluffs," was the name of a nearby Chumash village.
To reflect this heritage, Satwiwa Native American Indian #Culture #Center and #Natural #Area was established by the National Park Service in partnership with the Friends of Satwiwa.
A Native American guest host or a park ranger is on hand to answer questions from 9am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

#Acjachemen and #Tongva tribes recently won title to 6.2 acres of land on the #BolsaChica Mesa in #HuntingtonBeach
The soil treatment plan follows a conflict that began between the university and local tribes in 2019, when CSULB dumped dirt from a nearby construction project on Puvungna, which is used for ceremonies and spiritual gatherings.

"Tribal leaders, scientists and conservation advocates buried Southern California’s most famous mountain lion Saturday in the mountains where the big cat once roamed.
"After making his home in the urban Griffith Park — home of the Hollywood Sign — for the past decade, P-22 became a symbol for California’s endangered mountain lions and their decreasing genetic diversity. The mountain lion’s name comes from being the 22nd puma in a National Park Service study.
"The traditional tribal burial included songs, prayers and sage smoke cleansings, according to Alan Salazar, a tribal member of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians and a descendent of the Chumash tribe.
"Mountain lions are regarded as relatives and considered teachers in the Chumash, Tataviam and Gabrielino (Tongva) the Chumash, Tataviam and Gabrielino (Tongva) tribal communities."
