Okay. Season 3 was somewhat better than the second season (though pretty cheesy). They had mushrooms growing on actual logs this time (yay).

But, umm, what the frak happened to Izzie’s girlfriend? I guess the right moment came and went?

Also, relieved they didn’t kill Paara off screen. But also, the sole survivor? 😔

Also, I feel bad for Petra having to witness the murder of her mom.

Obviously this was a rush job to wrap up loose ends once they show got canceled.

Welcome to Jurassic Tar Pits.

shark + jumping

They have done irreparable damage to the timeline and to my sensibility.

I am sick of this show and there’s still an entire season left.

The constant backstabbing makes this feel like elimination reality TV. I suffered through a season of these hyper competitive shows and that was it.

It’s a real shame because some of these actors seem real talented and I’m curious about where some plot lines will lead, but I cannot with another “I had no choice” or “we have to do [controversial] X.”

I never finished Merlin because of this kind of behavior.

Thirdly, and this is hilarious, Chicken of the Woods does grow on Eucalyptus—but it’d need to be dead or wounded. As many of you know, Eucalyptus is not native to California. It arrived around the time of the gold rush. Of course, with all the sink holes from all over, it is not impossible they were deposited in the past.

Lastly, these mushrooms, identified by sight by a cop from, checks notes, Louisiana (where, I might add, the mushrooms are also identified as being orange) are 12,000 years older than the mushrooms she claims to know. Is this a poisonous lookalike species? Was there an evolutionary change that made them non-poisonous. Did this person even consider this possibility before declaring them safe?

Let’s talk a little about these mushrooms that they find growing on very live and healthy eucalyptus trees and how there is a non-zero chance they died after eating them. Basic spoilers from season 1.

First of all, the mushroom hunter declared what they are on sight without visual inspection and does not share identifying characteristics with the rest of the soon-to-be harvesters.

Secondly, from what I can see (and guess), these are just some oyster mushrooms (genus Pleurotus) from the local grocer. “Chicken of the Woods” (genus Laetiporus) as I know them in Northern California are quite orange/yellow. Very much unlike what we were seeing (I’m assuming someone couldn’t find them available for purchase for filming on those days 🙃).

I have to keep watching. I don’t have a choice.

Maybe we’re getting a bit more of the Tongva people who lived here before the sky people. But also, consequences for people’s messed up actions (and yet they keep making them).

I didn’t mention before, but I’ve been thinking about the plants too. The eucalyptus trees are a little funny, but not as funny as modern corn. It might even be a bit early for teosinte. But maybe someone dropped modern corn seed in a rift.

This show feels a little cookie cutter adventure show with different colored sprinkles. I was reminded of the Terra Nova* series a bit. I want more intrigue into historical elements.

Having checked the ratings, it’s a little funny that one if the characters commented how good TV was in the 80s, but that could also reflect negatively on the attitudes of the character. 🙃

*Edit: An earlier draft erroneously referred to Dinotopia.

  • First off, a lot of the cast just feels so white/white adjacent.
  • They had a boyscout in their group yet somehow they settled on all their food lying on a tarp on the ground being the best solution. Critters ultimately being the biggest concern (that ground sloth was epic, by the way), but come on. Does LA not have ants? Did anyone not even think of ants?
  • Yay! They mention the Indigenous people. Boo. Where are the Indigenous people? We have genocide (again) and assimilation (again). We only get introduced to one person speaking of being indigenous to the land and she winds up being a love interest who then has to bend to the whims of the protagonists.
  • A problem gets introduced and basically waved away off screen (I want to see them struggle with their gardening). Why does this show feel like a vehicle for conflict?
  • Can we not do love triangle drauma?

I finished watching the first season of NBC’s La Brea series. I have some thoughts.

First, the visual effects team did a great job with the critters, I think. Not sure about behaviors overall, but they looked very realistic. On the flip side, props to the prop master(s) for the obviously fake rabbits used for food. Following comments will contain spoilers.
