Kinda guessing here... but this seems to be the dark form female Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly. Originally thought it was Spicebush but markings don't seem quite right, nor for Black Swallowtail. Those are the three main suspects in this area of Michigan...

@donray @dillyd I have enough of both around that I can pretty much tell by size. In this set of photos the Viceroy never opened its wings. So the "black bar" ID wasn't helpful. I'd forgotten which it was too and it was only last week😆

The Monarchs haven't been posing well for the camera this year. Seem to be even flightier with the recent HOT weather. There was one yesterday that would have been easy enough but I was concentrating on the Tiger Swallowtail instead🙄

One of the things I love about the butterfly is that if you Spoonerize the name, you call them a flutterby, which is just as apt a description as their actual name

Desktop Cleanup

Here is a photo of a tiger swallowtail butterfly (Papilio glaucus). It's been sitting on my desktop because I don't particularly like backdrop of dirt and gravel. But it is either post or delete and it doesn't hurt to show it to you.
