The letter my ex father-in-law wrote to his mother on the eve of D Day.
He was part of a tank regiment so wasn’t involved in the initial landings.
He holds a rather dubious ‘accolade’. Whilst they were pushing on through France his tank got hit by enemy fire. The whole crew managed to escape relatively unharmed but because they were ‘pushing on’ they were actually a few miles behind enemy lines. They managed to evade capture for a week before being captured… by the Americans. The reason; his platoon were the first in the British army to be issued with black tank suits… just like the panzer crews wore. It took them 3 days to convince the Americans that they weren’t Germans.
