The door itself is almost secondary. The facade stops you first: gilded tree reliefs rising from tangled roots across the entire surface of this Schwabing building, flanking a dark walnut door with a verdigris ironwork panel of stylized lilies at its base. Jugendstil's obsession with organic form, taken to its logical extreme.

Three Munich doors are competing this week. This one is Team Grove.

Above this door in Schwabing, two figures recline across a vivid blue and gold frieze, paradise rendered in Jugendstil polychrome against a rose-pink facade. The door below is warm honey-blond, its fan transom catching light through arched glass panes. Munich's Art Nouveau architects knew: sometimes the door is just the beginning.

Munich's Jugendstil architects didn't stop at the door. They treated the whole facade as the canvas. One building in Schwabing has a warm honey-blond double door with sunburst fan transom glass, but it's the polychrome frieze above that stops you: two reclining figures in white relief against vivid blue and gold, fruit trees arching overhead. Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Jugendstil at its most theatrical.
