#WritersCoffeeClub 16/3: What's the largest cast you've ever written? What made it challenging?

I believe the largest was in #TheMindOnFire due it spanning almost two decades and half a continent. Sometimes,it was hard to keep an overview of all the minor characters. I kept a personage - and my main cast limited to a handful of people. That helped.

@willelm

When I research for my historical books, I read almost everything I can lay my hands on. If possible, I also travel to the places. They might have changed over time, and yet.

It's hard to say which story took the most effort. I wrote the first in 2006, my resources limited (and sources too, since the time was 1144). The most extensive however, might have been #TheMindOnFire because it spans almost 2 decades and several countries. Took me forever to finish.

#WritersCoffeeClub - 6 Oct. What size casts do you tend towards? Why?

My max is 4 POV characters. I do this because I don't like a lot of POVs (anymore. Honestly, since reading A Gane of Thrones, I even loath that).
Supporting cast may tend to be huge, especially in historical fiction when my characters travel. I believe #TheMindOnFire holds the record.

These days, I try to limit myself more. Less confusing for the reader.

#WordWeavers 25.May Do you prefer writing wealthy, middle class, or indigent characters?

Whatever fits the story.
Cyn in #ChasingWildDreams was once homeless and still carries that with him.
Niklas in #TheMindOnFire was poor but got adopted by a rich baron.
Katja in #OdysseyToThePromisedLand is in between starving but turns out to be not so poor after all.
And Sophie's family in #AlsterDiamonds is rich, but she's confronted with the alley quarters of Hamburg.

Whatever fits.

#WritersCoffeeClub 8 May. Give an example of a project you’ve had to give up on.

I'm not sure I've ever truly given up on a project. There are several on the backburner, like: look at this later & see if we can turn it into a good story. There's also my training story which will never be published. But that doesn't feel like giving up because I never really got to the point where I wanted it finished.

#TheMindOnFire was different. That one I almost gave up. So glad it got done after 12 years!

How present is music in your work?

Not at all in #JulesNVera

However, music played a big role in #TheMindOnFire aka #DerGeistInBrand and a huge one in my fun project #Kyznon.
Super, mega, monster huge.

#ScribesAndMakers Mar 31. How did it go? Any changes you want to make next month?

March went super fast. Got a lot of work done for #JulesNVera, redid the cover of #TheMindOnFire, and visited my first book con ever.

I can't believe tomorrow is April 1st. One quarter of 2025 if already gone?

Plans for April: Clean up some accounting stuff, hopefully get #JulesNVera done, and write a little for fun.

Breathe. Breathe more.

#ScribesAndMakers Mar 29 What is your proudest or best moment with your creative endeavour this month?

Worked with a cover artist to at last update the cover of #TheMindOnFire which was kinda half-assed last year.

She did the background, I the arrangement. And I'm super happy because it reflects so much of the story.

#WritersCoffeeClub Jan 20 Do any of your stories take place on the sea?

Not #GabrielZurmuehlen. He stays entirely on dry land.

Niklas from #TheMindOnFire travels several times over the Channel. And of course, Katja and Max from #OdysseyToThePromisedLand cross the Mediterranean, with Max getting terribly seasick.
