I approach things the same way, hence, I see the beauty of novels & #TV #drama where few others did (and hence they rate them very low).

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon
(2024 - Viki, 16 1:10 eps)

A treasured former student shows up to teach at FL's academy after leaving a promising job. He wants a new direction in life & she was his 1st love. There is an age gap, but it seems to only be about 5 yrs in the show (9 IRL). His arrival stirs up trouble mainly because he wants to teach the way she taught him - to learn & not memorize.

A wonderful commentary on the education system drives the plot through the 1st 12ish eps. The very harsh competition with the other academies was unsettling. The FL tries to avoid her feelings to protect him & herself. This comes across on screen well, but even when she finally admits it, it feels like she's still holding back.

The drama flounders at the end as we lose the education system commentary, & the war between the dueling academies becomes a farce.

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon

After resigning from a big company, Lee Joon Ho returns to the academy where he'd studied, this time as an instructor. He's motivated by his lingering...

@ronsboy67 @EllenInEdmonton The age difference is not a problem for me. They start the relationship 3 years after he graduates from university, so he was almost in his 30s if you add military service.

On the other hand I found upsetting that she easily gave up her mindset and her reputation to stay with him. She taught him how to be a teacher and yet he thinks he knows best than her. The FL became a push-over and the ML stayed selfish.

That's The Midnight Romance in Hagwon finished. I wasn't sure where they were going to go with it. The world of academies seems rather nasty. I kind of liked the ending but I would have changed it slightly so a certain someone didn't leave. #TheMidnightRomanceInHagwon #KDrama

An enjoyable #kdrama until episode 12. Then it gets a bit boring. I was expecting some major plot twist at the end but nothing too unexpected happened.

It's slow paced. The hagwon world is portrayed quite accurately and the teachers struggle for power (gaining students, schools, exam questions) makes it interesting.

As for the romance, it does not suit me. The couple dynamics shifts in a way that I don't appreciate much.

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon - Wikipedia

@Missrdevine @whoosh @emmaaum I watched episode 5 yesterday.

It is monochrome and I can understand it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love the slow-paced plot, the focus on characters' expressions and dialogues, the literary references and the deep insight on the Korean mindset when it comes to education.
No other #kdrama has shown the hagwon world so thoroughly.

I also feel that it's time for the romance to start though.

@whoosh @emmaaum yes, definitely! So far I only have positive feedback. It's also very helpful in order to understand what role hagwons play in education. And why it's so difficult to change the system.

I watched the trailers for this yesterday. I think it looks really good.

@emmaaum I've started watching #TheMidnightRomanceInHagwon and it might be your kind of #drama.

I'm 4 episodes in and there's no violence, no dramatic moments and no traumatic experiences.
It's all about status and competition. Both in the Korean society and among people working for hagwons.
