In the week after Jerry Garcia died on 9 August 1995, I wrote a song as a eulogy for him, "The Captain". This morning I pulled it out and ran through it with special attention to the vocals (in connection with my singing lessons). The "captain" in the song is

From this point of view as can be seen here, El Capitan stands in all its glory rising 3,000 feet above the valley floor. The gray granite seems to dominate the valley floor and from this perspective it does. But the river that cuts through the valley will lead you to many other places that try to also compete.
