I'm always paying attention to what survives these periods of extreme heat. So, on day 2 of excessive heat (and bear in mind, we've had some freaky weather immediately prior too), the outdoor survivors include:

Southern Giant Mustard Greens
Alabama Blue Collards
Tomatoes (all)
Goth Basil (this is a homemade hybrid I got from a local gardener at a plant exchange)

Also, bizarrely, one broccoli plant. There's always at least one survivor I don't expect.

Today’s harvest.

Edited to add alt text.

Just went outside to water the garden. What a gratifying time of year in Zone8!

Temps are pretty mild, we get some rain, everything is flourishing.

In my own little urban garden Crawford Lettuce, Southern Giant Mustard Greens, Mizuna Beni Houshi, Alabama Blue Collards are all doing beautifully. Amaranth running riot and in serious need of thinning.

Enough Goth Basil that I think we may end up with Goth Pesto :).

About a year ago I attended an Earth Day market and visited a "take a plant, leave a plant" table where a generous soul gifted me with basil seedlings.

She told me she called them "Goth Basil". They were a mix of purple basil and some other basils from her garden. "The bees made it", she said.

I allowed them to flower and reseed, months ago, and wasn't sure what would happen next.

And just this week...behold...Baby Goths!

Finally getting around to that #intropost thing:

I write and read short form #poetry, my preferred forms are #haiku and #cinquain but I've been known to try my hand at sonnets now and again.

One last zinnia was holding on as of last weekend. Not sure how it’s faring after this chilly weather set in. #gardening #texasgarden #texas #plants
