I have just got back from walking along part of the Cleveland Hills above Guisborough in North Yorkshire. It was a sunny but frosty morning after several days of rain. The air was very clear. The Cleveland Hills and Pennines were capped with snow. Beyond Teesmouth, on the northern horizon were two white shapes that I had not seen before. The leftmost was long and flat, the rightmost narrow and pointed. I am fairly sure these were the snow-capped Cheviot and Hedgehope Hill, 80 miles away and almost on the Scottish border. When I was at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the '80s my tutor said that he could see the Cheviot from his office in the Claremont Tower. See the image in this old article in the Guardian for what they look like: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/mar/26/country-diary-cheviots-clear-view-1968. Today the snowline on them was at a lower level than in that image.

Country diary 1968: a clear view of the Cheviots

29 March 1968 Visibility of 40 miles is not so unusual in this county because there is virtually no industrial area between here and the west coast

Dredging Up Trouble on the Tees

The tanker Stolt Auk slips past a derelict wooden jetty at South Gare, heading for Rotterdam. The jetty is older than the Gare itself, built before 1888, and once served the North Riding (Fortress) Royal Engineers as part of the river’s coastal defences. It now stands abandoned, a relic of an industrial past that never quite goes away.

Out & About ...
In the TV series 'Auf Wiedersehen, Pet', the iconic Tees Transporter Bridge was sold, dismantled and re-assembled across a gorge in the USA.
In real life, the Middlesbrough landmark, known locally affectionately as the 'The Tranny', was this year added to Historic England's Heritage at Risk register.
Sadly, the Grade II* listed structure has now been out of service since 2019 over concerns about safety.
In 2024, following a number of structural assessments, engineers reported that the crossing was at risk of catastrophic collapse and that the cost of repairs were estimated to be in excess of £60m.

Spanning the River Tees at Stockton in NE England, the public pedestrian/cycle crossing known as 'Infinity Bridge' is a great place to catch a sunset composition at this time of the year.
It's a short distance downstream from Stockton's town centre, near the Tees Barrage.
Opened in 2009, it was built at a cost of £15 million.

waking up to the #news that leaked documents from the #MoD reveal locations for potential new #ArmsFactories in the so-called #UK.

"sites under consideration include parts of the #grangemouth industrial complex, the #finnart oil terminal on #LochLong, and locations in #cumbria, #teesside, #northumberland, #southampton and #wales".

in #teesside, i bet it's the old chemical site in #StocktonOnTees right next to a huge residential estate that has already been polluted for decades.

these arms factories are supposed to create a 1000 jobs in total, with the potential to kill many thousands more.

#GifsArtidote: #capitalist murderous greed, that's what it is, & we should not accept this & strongly resist these plans. 😡
affected communities should immediately set up resistance groups & develop positive, green, peaceful & community-led alternatives that create more jobs & develop these impoverished areas sustainably & healthily for everyone.
