Podcast: #FailingForward
Host: Steve Hofstetter
Comes out: no longer produced
Duration: approx 45 minutes
Subject: interview

The official about:
Failing Forward is a podcast all about the times when everything goes wrong. Some stories are funny, some are sad, and some are motivational.
And sometimes they're even heartwarming.
Whoever the guest, comedian Steve Hofstetter will take you on a journey through failure, rejection, and sometimes…thankfully…success.

My thoughts:
For a show hosted by a comedian, this is one of the most poignant podcasts I’ve ever listened to. It’s up there with Louis Theroux for me. I listened to the entire 40+ episodes during the first covid lockdown and I wish there’d been more episodes. You will laugh, you will cry and, if you don’t, you may not be human.

Podcast: #MrBallenPodcast
Host: Jonathan B Allen
Comes out: twice a week
Duration: approx 25-45 minutes
Subject: true crime

The official about:
The strange, dark and mysterious delivered in podcast format

My thoughts:
I love this podcast, which may seem weird as I’m only giving a 3 star review but that’s mainly because it’s now a subscription podcast so I can’t listen to it anymore. The stories are well told, the host has the perfect voice for it, and they are interesting (some are even downright creepy). You can find MrBallen content on YouTube as well, if you don’t want to pay.

Podcast: #Grounded
Host: Louis Theroux
Comes out: no longer produced
Duration: approx. 1 hour
Subject: interviews

The official about:
Stuck at home, Louis is using the lockdown to track down some high-profile people he's been longing to talk to - from all walks of life and on both sides of the Atlantic.

My thoughts:
Louis has a unique interview style. It’s very informal and feels like he’s just chatting to his mates, even if he’s never met them before. I listened to these during lockdown, when the were coming out so I had to wait for each episode. You don’t! You can binge the lot! Totally worth the time it will take.

Podcast: #Danswers
Host: Dan Donohue
Comes out: once or twice a week
Duration: approx. 60 minutes
Subject: anything and everything

The official about:
Dan Donohue (NotBadDan) answers all your questions, as well as giving news updates and rants about what ever he thinks of.

My thoughts:
Dan is as close to an Aussie as an American is going to get. He’s a laconic, “she’ll be right,” knock about kind of a guy. If it weren’t for the accent, he could probably pass. If you like your humour irreverent, give this a listen. He can ramble, go off on tangents and not actually answer the question, but it’s fun. It’s like having a conversation with a real person except he’s the only one talking for the most part.

Podcast: #LettingItSettleWithMichaelGalyon
Host: Michael Galyon
Comes out: weekly
Duration: up to approx. 35 minutes
Subject: mindfulness

The official about:
Find your calm and navigate the chaos of life with Michael Galyon, an experienced mindfulness instructor and certified professional coach. Receive actionable takeaways, guided meditations, and mindfulness exercises that you can easily incorporate into your daily life.
With a holistic approach to well-being and a mission to spread kindness, Michael inspires individuals to take charge of their mental and emotional well-being - promoting a calmer, kinder, and more connected world

My thoughts:
I have only listened to the free episodes and they have been really interesting. I think this will be a useful resource as the number of episodes build up. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because there are more subscription episodes than free episodes (I’d be happy with a 50/50 split).

Podcast: #ThePoetryOfScience
Host: Sam Illingworth
Comes out: weekly
Duration: approx. 7 minutes
Subject: science and poetry

The official about:
New scientific research, interpreted and presented via the medium of poetry.

My thoughts:
This is a great podcast if you love poetry and science, and don’t have much time. Sam has a brilliant way of turning what can be dry research material into delightful snippets of verse.

He weaves words as if by magic - reading his original poetry, along with the science that inspires it - and always manages to find the perfect accompaniment for his own work in the works of other poets from all walks of life that relates in some way to the subject at hand.

It’s like a taste test of poetry and science - a morsel to intrigue you without overwhelming you, so you might go off and look into the subject area yourself.

Podcast: #TheInfiniteMonkeyCage
Host: Brian Cox and Robin Ince
Comes out: weekly
Duration: approx. 45 minutes
Subject: science

The official about:
Brian Cox and Robin Ince host a witty irreverent look at the world through scientists’ eyes.

My thoughts:
Going since 2017, this show has covered so many aspects of science, it’s hard to say what they haven’t covered. Joined by scientists, comedians and personalities, the show offers what it says on the box. I’ve laughed, cried and been amazed. Robin and Brian are great pairing (having seen them live, it definitely translates to the podcast). Just don’t ask about strawberries!

Podcast: #BadAdviceWednesdays
Host: The Speech Prof
Comes out: weekly
Duration: approx. 30-60 minutes
Subject: Various

The official about:
Comedic interviews where The Speech Prof (Chesko) and a rotating guest talk comedy and kindness while giving purposefully bad advice to questions from his followers that they submit without context.

My thoughts:
I really like the host on Instagram and the same fun energy carries over into the podcast. The guests are varied and give interesting takes on the subjects, though sometimes they both struggle to stick to the “bad advice” theme and actually give good advice.

It’s light hearted, a good filler podcast, and an awesome introduction to some interesting people.

The #SundayPodcastRec

Podcast: #BadManors
Host: Tom Houghton
Comes out: weekly
Duration: approx. 30 minutes
Subject: British stately homes

The official about:
UK comedian The Honourable Tom Houghton takes us inside Britain's stately homes, castles and country estates to hear about their local histories, the scandals, the mysteries and occasionally the odd ghost that makes up the fabric of what they are. These are the tales you won't hear in the guidebook.

My thoughts:
This is an easy listen because Tom is genuine and down to earth, getting into history the same way most people do, by laughing at the absurdity of it, and his reactions are priceless. We are introduced to the building, it’s history and occupants in a way that is relatable, fascinating and not complicated.

Tom injects humour into even the darkest of subjects, and it gets pretty dark! The stories of ghosts, torture and battle get a comedy treatment that retains their horror while giving us a giggle.
