Women have been shouting about the toxic influence of certain men for decades, writes Emma Flint. But it’s taken Louis Theroux to elicit more than a sorrowful silence when hearing about the appalling behaviour of those in the ‘manosphere’

Base-Superstructure Dialectic in Action Louis Theroux’s „Inside the Manosphere“, provides an unflinching ethnographic immersion into the manosphere’s protagonists, capturing their raw rhetoric and profit-driven antics across Miami streets, Marbella hideouts, and podcast studios, while inadvertently laying bare the contradictions of neoliberal alienation. Through extended encounters—from Justin Waller’s patriarchal monologues to Harrison Sullivan’s prank-fueled streams—the film documents a subculture that commodifies male insecurity, offering a fertile text for Marxist analysis of how capitalism reproduces its ideological superstructures amid economic base erosion. The film’s core strength lies in its detailed profiling of manosphere figures whose personas function as fetishized commodities in late
I watched some of Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends the other night. It was one about Aliens.
Looking back at these programmes, I never realised what an ass Theroux was. I always picked up on his sarcastic, piss-taking attitude, but he really comes across like a dick.
I think younger me was more 'Ha! Yeah, these stupid people are stupid and deserve to be ridiculed on a BBC2 documentary! Stupid people for having alternative opinions about things!'
But watching it I just found myself feeling sorry for the UFO theorist and how the show's paradigm just set them up to look foolish.
Sure, you can interview these types of people who live on the fringes, but you shouldn't really make the documentary that ridicules them. Yes, the viewers will form their own opinions and probably think these people are stupid losers, but it shouldn't be the programme makers pushing that opinion.
It's just punching down, and I found it very unpleasant.

OK, so I watched #LouisTheroux's #Documentary about the #manosphere. I'm not actually sure what the point of it was. I guess if you never heard of the manosphere and knew nothing about it, this would give you some idea.
But beyond that, was there anything new here? Any in-depth analysis? Any constructive ideas how to challenge it? I don't think so.
