This is the Marble Boat, a pavilion on a lake within the Summer Palace in Beijing. It's actually wood, painted to look like stone, and dates from the late 19th century, replacing a previous boat-shaped pavilion burnt down during the Second Opium War by the British.

A combination #ThrowBackThursday and #TravelThursday post looking back to 2008 and a visit to the Summer Palace in Beijing during our pre-cruise honeymoon stay in China. This is the 18th century Jade Belt Bridge on Kunming Lake, designed to resemble southern Chinese countryside bridges but with an exaggerated height to allow the Qianlong Emperor's boat to pass under.

We visited the Summer Palace in Beijing after the Great Wall trip in 2008 and after a walk around we took a dragon boat out onto Kunming Lake to see the numerous bridges around this tranquil spot in the city, and also to see this view of the Tower of the Fragrance of the Buddha, once burnt down by Anglo-French forces but later rebuilt in this current form.
