In the early 1910s, C. M. Sternberg found the holotype fossils in what is now known as Dinosaur Provincial Park.

In 1913, Lawrence Lambe named the holotype Styracosaurus, meaning spiked lizard, after the many large spikes coming from its frill

In 1935, a crew from the Royal Ontario Museum revisited the site finding many missing elements, including the lower jaw, and most of the rest of the skeleton.
