Lunchtime run.

Had to visit the @WedaleBooks, so difficult πŸ˜† so we made a virtue of a necessity and did the run up to the Broch and had to seek sustenance in The Wild Hare Cafe. 8k but steep, mainly tracks.

Managing dotfiles the Right Way: GNU Stow and ln -s

Even if you are a Linux novice or a Pro, you are always experimenting stuff, which can go anywhere from a pleasant experience to disastrous end. So, it is a wise idea to keep track of changes to all the configuration files AKA dotfiles via public or private git repo, to easily rollback whenever needed.

Flatpak & GNU Stow problems (solved)

Could someone tell me how to let #Flatpak follow symlinks? I have #dotfiles managed by #stow and Flatpak apps can't see the #Kvantum config.

So, I've got symlinks in xdg-config and I'd like for Flatpak to follow them to the folder where the configurations actually reside in (~/.config/home-dir). Search results have been unhelpful.

For example, if I do ls in ~/.config/Kvantum it shows this:
kvantum.kvconfig -> ../../.config/home-dir/.config/Kvantum/kvantum.kvconfig

And even if I give Flatpak apps access to xdg-config/home-dir:ro and xdg-config/Kvantum:ro they won't use the config.

SOLUTION: I switched to Tuckr for dotfiles management, which let me symlink the whole Kvantum directory instead of the individual files. This somehow allowed Flatpak to access the themes.

I finally took the leap and started using #stow for managing my dotfiles.

This is so amazing and once you get past the horrifying GNU documentation, it gets pretty easy, And it is simply AWESOME.

I also created a simple helper script for stow with #babashka to make managing my dotfiles simpler.

Now I manage dotfiles for different devices in a cohesive and super clean manner.

@publicvoit I used to use #stow and moved to #chezmoi recently. It's very nice for the templates, and the handling of more things (scripts, externals, etc.)
BUT by default it doesn't use symlinks, only copies of files, and hence when a tool writes to the config file, it is not propagated back.

You can of course tell chezmoi to use a symlink for such a file (https://www.chezmoi.io/user-guide/manage-different-types-of-file/#handle-configuration-files-which-are-externally-modified) but it's not very convenient.

Also chezmoi's handling of permissions is basic (enough for me, but…).

Pretty neat! And it works on #macOS too! :D

So I've started my current Linux dotfiles repository in 2017... it was actually my second iteration on having dotfiles in general.

I'm using stow to link my dotfiles, it has worked well enough for me.

Almost 4k commits later in 2025 I'm pretty happy with my setup :)

PS: A lot of commits are just updates to a personal "Wiki" which is basically a very long markdown file where I keep useful notes and links.
