Black people are up to 48 times more likely than whites to be stopped and searched by police in wealthier parts of London, research suggests.

Reacting, Green London Assembly Member, Zoë Garbett, told My London:

The Mayor has called stop and search a ‘vital policing tool,’ despite its disproportionate targeting of Black Londoners, which makes him part of the problem by assuming that stop and search is an inevitable aspect of policing…

Constituents and community groups I’ve spoken to describe stop and search as an invasive and degrading tactic and they say it causes real and long-lasting harm that undermines trust and confidence in the police.

My friends over at StopWatch have produced a banging newsletter this month. It quite simply shouts to the reform that’s so long overdue in UK policing. They do great work. (It’s just a shame it’s on Substack)

October 2025: Haunted by the ghosts of racists past

Police ramp up racism for Black History Month, also get the green light to change the record on leniency granted for killing civilians

Stroud Against Racism is based, out in the boonies, in rural Gloucestershire. One of the strands of the work we do is Police accountability.

People from our community (e.g. SAR members) are able sit on various Panels to scrutinise the Constabulary. SAR has fought hard to get confidentiality agreements rewritten to permit our participation.

However, SAR's admin team is very worried about recent changes at Gloucestershire Constabulary in the way this community scrutiny has changed, to the detriment of our Black and minority ethnic community. We think these changes may be a precursor to wider, national, roll out.
