The same four elements also appear on Glasgow's coat of arms, as well as all over the city, and they are known locally as the tree that never grew, the bird that never flew, the bell that never rang and the fish that never swam.

One of the lamp posts outside Glasgow Cathedral. These feature four symbols, a bird, a bell, a tree and a fish with a ring in its mouth.

These symbols are linked to miracles attributed to Saint Mungo, the cathedral's founder and the city's Patron Saint. These are set within hook which seems to be modelled on a Bishop's Crozier, presumably a reference to Saint Mungo being the first Bishop of Glasgow.

28. Mausoleum

🧠The family who built this must be very rich for it to be so big and high up!

⭐I like the colour of the stone and the different textures on the structure.

➡️ It's probably looking a bit too similar to my other Necropolis pictures!

21. Bird Tree Bell Fish

🧠 I love these lamposts with the Glasgow coat of arms around the cathedral and tried quite a few shots getting them in.

⭐The detail on the fish and surrounding circle has come up really well

➡️ I *think* trying to bring up the brightness of the sky hasn't quite worked inside the circle round the coat of arms and it gives it an artifical look.

20. Necropolis

🧠 There's so many good views in the Necroplis - I think this is the first one I took when I walked in.

⭐I love the colour of the grass and sky - helped by some Lightroom editing.

➡️ I would have liked to pull out the biggest structure a bit more in terms of detail and colour but don't really know how yet.

17. Dome

🧠 I wanted to focus on the detail of the dome, with the cathedral adding some background colour.

⭐I think the detail came up well .

➡️ Maybe more blue sky in the background would have made for more balanced colour.

16. Holy Smoke!

🧠 When I saw this statue in the Necropolis, I knew I wanted to get a shot of her looking over the city. I didn't notice till after that the long cloud level with her face looks like smoke coming out of her mouth!

⭐I like how much detail I've got in the subject compared to other shoots with my new camera. I feel I'm getting the hang of settings better and not just letting ISO go on auto and get cranked right up!

➡️ I feel some of the background looks shaky as well as blurred but I'm not sure.

the glorious empire somewhat shaming,
trade and tobacco lording
over golden and red sandstone
where the tree never grew,
the bird never flew,
the fish never swam,
the bell never rang…

Molly Pin Li McLaren,
come home and look
at the pictures in your brand-new book—
a tree, a bird, a fish, a bell,
a bell, a fish, a tree, a bird.
Point, wee Molly, and say the word!
