FèisTV: Floraidh Stevenson - A' Chaim

Gur a mis’ tha fo mhulad,
'S mi bhith fuireach sa Chaim;
Ann am bothan gun fhasgadh,
Gun mhacnus, gun mhaing.

Seo an òran a thagh Flòraidh Stevenson airson am pròiseact Fuaran aice - ‘A’ Chaim’. 🎤 Rinn Uilleam MacCoinnich an t-òran seo uair a choireigin ro 1868 fhad ’s a bha e a’ fuireach sa Chaim, a tha faisg air a' Choire Odhair. Tha dà ghuth anns an òran, an t-sealgair agus am fiadh, is tha iad a’ bruidhinn ri chèile. 🦌

Dh’ionnsaich Flòraidh mun òran seo as deidh dhi bruidhinn ri Teàrlach MacPhàrlainn. Thòisich Teàrlach air òran a sheinn às an leabhar ‘An Duanaire’ is bha Flòraidh air a beò-ghlacadh leis. 🎶 Nuair a dh’innis e dhi mun sgeulachd air cùl an òran, bha i cinnteach gum b’ e sin an t-òran a bha i airson cleachdadh airson am pròiseact aice.

This is the song that Flòraidh Stevenson chose for her Fuaran project – ‘A’ Chaim.’ 🎤 This song was composed by William MacKenzie sometime before 1868, while he was living in A’ Chaim, which is near Corrour. The song has two voices, the hunter and the deer, and they speak to one another. 🦌

Flòraidh learned about this song after first speaking with Charles MacFarlane. Charles began singing a song from the book An Duanaire, and Flòraidh was captivated by it. 🎶 When he told her the story behind the song, she knew it was the one she wanted to use for her project.

Prof Alan Riach: “The representation in Gaelic literature of Culloden […] makes a study of that literature, even in translation, a vital corrective to that of more exclusively English or Scottish literature in Scots & English.”
