28th April 2025: The day everything went dark

I never thought that I would be writing any more meta posts after the Covid and vaccination posts, but here we are, another unexpected and surreal event. With one of my parents away for a week, I w…

Be careful, and get prepared.

End of last week Spain did much the same, then we had the #spainblackout!

With the recent blackout news from Spain/Portugal, I think now is a great time to pick up the excellent "How Infrastructure Works" by Deb Chachra @debcha if you haven't already.

It's one of those books that gets *more* relevant over time.

Good article but.
Good that it pushes for grid investments, but maybe it's better not to suggest non-renewable sources, if your problem is managing flexibility. Batteries and in general time shifting systems not gas-fired power plants

#SpainBlackout my parents are hiking in the north west of Spain. In the rural area a restaurant had power and could serve warm food, but no payment except cash.
The accommodation didn't had power and it recovered in the early morning around 4. The TV and lights suddenly went on. Mobile network went down a little bit after power outage.

If there's anything we could learn from yesterday's #SpainBlackout is that running software on the cloud that could run locally... is a terrible idea.

#LocalFirst software should be prioritised by companies and public administrations.

I don't think Spanish people will learn the lesson this time (I'm Spanish, so I know what I'm talking about from first hand experience).

I foresee some small groups will react, and start spreading the word, but it will take many other disasters like this one for people to finally understand.
