Earlier today I gave an astronomy- and policy-focused talk on obtrusive space advertising in the Dark & Quiet Skies context for the long-running Future In-Space Operations (FISO) Telecon series.

#SpaceAdvertising is back in the news.
The story isn't encouraging.

Concerns about the potential impact of obtrusive #SpaceAdvertising on the night sky continue to generate media stories. Here's one from @Tagesspiegel (auf Deutsch) for which I was interviewed recently.
Thanks to Sharmila Kuthunur for this comprehensive Scientific American story on the status quo regarding space advertising, the potential harm to astronomy it poses, and what astronomers are doing to address the issue.

Kudos to @iau_org for including a mention of obtrusive space advertising in its statement during this week's meeting of the Science and Technology Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

"[W]hile [astronomers] continue to work on satellite interference issues, they are expanding their work to other topics broadly associated with space sustainability. These issues range from the threat of obtrusive space advertising and reentries that interfere with their observations to the danger of confusing asteroids with flying Teslas."

Obtrusive space advertising will impact the visual appearance of the night sky, interfere with ground-based astronomy, and it may have currently unknown environmental effects. But there's still a chance to get out ahead of (and even prevent) this problem.

A satirical take on #SpaceAdvertising: "Astronomers will argue that gigantic sky ads hinder our ability to explore the cosmos, and educate our children on the wonders of outer space. That it would prevent astronomers from uncovering the aforementioned mysteries of the universe. That it would be fucked up beyond measure to start selling the sky. But we need to take care of our home the best way we know how. By taking the natural resources god blessed us with and siphoning as much money out of them as humanly possible."
