It was nice being around so many like-minded people at the protest against the new e-bike laws today. The new laws will prevent under-16s from operating even a pedal-assisted e-bike and cap e-bikes to 10km/h on shared paths and other paths that aren't exclusive to bicycles.

Crazy how the QLD regime wants to basically outlaw bikes and ban phrases that they don't like.

The main takeaway was that the laws are being reviewed by a committee which is taking submissions. If you ride an e-bike, or would ride one in the future, consider making a submission.

It only takes 5 minutes if you have the time.

I added a note about the active transport infrastructure deficit. Cycling, e-bikes and scooters have been on the rise in Brisbane and Queensland for many years. Creating an effective ban on e-bikes and e-mobility would affect so many people in a time when we need more of it, not less.

Many accidents have also involved e-motorbikes which were already previously illegal. Enforcement of those already illegal devices should be far more of a priority than introducing new laws.

This is why I get frustrated with people who claim that campaigning for bikeways is ableist. Popi and Steve are loving their electric tricycle and tandem trike trailer (TTT) combination. They can enjoy adventures together, and also load up their groceries into the baskets.

Many people who can't drive can still enjoy independent mobility by bike or trike - especially with electrical assistance.

Designing our cities to prioritise motor vehicle traffic is ableist. Safe cycleways are great for everyone!
