I've posted a little recently on my concerns about #geoengineering and #solarengineering approaches to tackling the symptoms but not the causes of #climatechange
In particular, I've expressed my concerns that such 'technology solutions' can or will create a belief that we can be relaxed about #carbonemissions now as future technology will save us in the future.
Whilst I think this is a hugely dangerous approach and worse still provides continuing camouflage and a licence to pollute for the #fossilfuel industry, there are nevertheless some researchers who consider research on these new technologies is vital. For some balance then, I'm sharing this considered exploration of the issue in an opinion piece in Nature advocating for the research to be done.
Personally, I believe a moratorium is needed now on all solar- and geo-engineering whilst we instead and firstly, put in place genuine plans and legislation for rapid global emission reductions and stop all new fossil fuel projects, rather than continuing with our current pathway of hollow pledges from governments and the smoke and mirrors of offsets and gas transitions.
Sadly though, we know the work on these climate mitigation technologies will go on anyway as we can already see from recent private start-up activity. Mirroring what is happening in the #AI arena (witness #ChatGPT) the genie is out of the bottle - a very dangerous place to be.
