Social Home

A private, federated household social network — calendars, shopping lists, photos, and chat that run on your own Home Assistant. Open source, MPL 2.0.

NOTE: This is a repost from the Fediverse-City Matrix Room.

I meant to post on the progress that @toddsundsted has been making on kristec.

I've been thoroughly impressed with all of the publishing features of his Fediverse server.

Some of the shortcomings, if that's how you choose to view them, might be that it's essentially a smolweb server leveraging noSQL and an accounts database that trusts all users as literal admins.

But if you're looking to self-host, and your primary interest is in publishing your own material on the #Fediverse, then this may be just the thing you've been looking for.

I cannot atest to the veracity of his claims because I haven't actually installed or tested its capabilities, but it's indeed a laundry list of features I've been hoping to see - leaving that Twitter style cloning of communications in the past, like I've been hoping for.

So for those interested, if you're impressed with the capabilities that #PieFed and #Mitra and #Socialhome bring to the table then here's a fourth initiative that is both visionary and inciteful in it's ambitions.

Your thoughts, observations?

Socialhome v0.23.0 released

Work continues towards a full replacement of the UI layer! @[email protected] has been hard at work again, working on both the UI layer, but also the backend and the federation library. Massive kudos <3

This is the last release where it will be possible to use the old UI. The next release is expected to completely remove the old UI, which will be a much welcome clean-up of the code base.

When updating, please note the instructions for running Socialhome with the new UI. The old setting to enable the new UI is gone, instead you will need to route to it using your reverse proxy. In the next release this will become mandatory as the old UI will disappear from the Socialhome backend container.

While things are in flux, unfortunately there aren't very good example ways to run the Socialhome backend and the new frontend. We're hoping to improve on this with the next release, when the old UI will be fully removed. Please pop in our chat room if you have issues attempting to run Socialhome.

Please note due to build issues with the old UI, arm images are not available for this release. If you need them, please ask in the chat room and we will figure something out.

This is not all! The release of v0.23.0 also contains a bunch of other changes and fixes. See the full changelog. Additionally, the federation library has received a ton of changes and fixes which can be found here.

Installing and updating

We recommend using the Docker images.

Notes on how to use the Docker images can be found in the docs.

What is Socialhome?

Socialhome is best described as a federated personal profile with social networking functionality. Users can create rich content using Markdown. All content can be pinned to the user profile and all content will federate to contacts in the federated social web. Federation happens using the ActivityPub and Diaspora protocols.

Please check the official site for more information about features. Naturally, the official site is a Socialhome profile itself.

Try Socialhome?

If you want to try Socialhome first before trying to install it, register at https://socialhome.network and then ping us with a comment on the user name chosen to get the account approved. You can also request account approval in the chat room. This unfortunately approval step is due to spammers.

#Socialhome hat ein neues Outfit bekommen. Das sieht sehr charmant aus. Ein Blick darauf lohnt. Das ist, neben #Diaspora und #Friendica, eines der ältesten Projekte im Fediverse.

socialhome.network maintenance

The https://socialhome.network instance is going to have a few rounds of maintenance within the next few days. First, within the next few hours likely, a database migration to another better server. Then afterwards we've got a big Socialhome version upgrade which involves lots of database migrations. All in all these will cause a few hours of downtime at minimum each.

We're sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Socialhome

I've finally got an account on #SocialHome @[email protected] , where I'll be collecting interesting links.
I used to use del.icio.us before it was claimed by the Grim Reaper of the Internet (Yahoo). I'd like to have a #curation site like that again. Is there something like it on the #fediverse? I've tried to set up an account on #SocialHome, but their signup process doesn't seem to work and they haven't been resposive. Is there anything else I could try?
@Prof. Rachel Thorn 🍉🇺🇦🏳️‍⚧️🏳️ I would also be in favor of Fediblock for instances where this behavior is rampant.
Alt-text on images is only a thing on Mastodon and amongst Pixelfed users who are also on Mastodon.

Fediblocking entire servers for a too low quota of sufficiently accurate, sufficiently detailed, rule-conforming alt-text would end up defederating Mastodon from most of the rest of the Fediverse. It would end up in the Fediblocking of entire Fediverse server application types. Pleroma, Akkoma, Misskey, Calckey, Firefish, Iceshrimp-JS, Iceshrimp.NET, CherryPick, Sharkey, Catodon, Smithereen, snac, GoToSocial, Mitra, Socialhome, Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams), Forte, Lemmy, /kbin, Mbin, PieFed, nodeBB, WordPress, Ghost, Flipboard, Plume and a whole lot of others would end up being defederated from Mastodon in their entirety because they don't have alt-text (and everyone upping their game in alt-text style, accuracy and level of detail) as an integral part of their culture.

Basically, from Mastodon's point of view, the Fediverse would end up actually being only Mastodon because Mastodon would have defederated with everything else, server by server.

I think I'm the only one on Hubzilla who actually describes their images. I'm definitely the only one amongst the few dozen (streams) users who does. But even if I put more time and effort into describing images than just about anyone else in the Fediverse, I think that wouldn't be enough to save either server application from being defederated from Mastodon in their entirety as long as not everyone else adds sufficiently accurate, sufficiently detailed, rule-conforming alt-texts to every last one of their images, as cumbersome as that may be on Hubzilla.
