We did an interesting activity today with my students - imagining and writing out our ideal day. The first thing I thought about was getting to the desert, and basking in dark skies. Sometimes I daydream about moving to rural Nevada, building a cabin and observatory, and living my life on sidereal time. But as the saying goes, "wherever you go, there you are." So I don't really think it'd solve all my problems.

Still, I'm grateful for those moments I do get to be under truly dark skies. They are really special and magical and make me feel like life is worth living. 🙂

What does your ideal day look like? What do you find meaningful in life?

I took this photo recently while out on the pacific coast. Thought it'd be appropriate to share it now since we have four human beings on their way to the moon 😯. As someone who wasn't born yet during the Apollo missions, it's a pretty surreal feeling.

One thing I like about the Artemis II crew is their attitude. I'm a STEM educator in my day job, and have a pretty strong (even fervent) belief that space travel can and *should* be done to share the awe and beauty of the vast unknown with *all* of humanity. I think the astronauts headed to the moon right now are doing a pretty good job of embodying that. ☺️

Sadly, that's not what I see in general in tech, and space is no exception. It seems like elon musk & co. want to turn outer space into a playground for the mega rich. And now I guess they want to train superintelligent AIs on orbiting data centers. What could possibly go wrong?

Anyways, it's just been nice to see a small W for humanity. Thanks NASA 🫡

How has everyone else been feeling about the Artemis missions? Have you had time to watch any of the downlinks or interviews with the astronauts?

A palette cleanse. Woke up feeling angry, frustrated and deeply cynical about the spiraling downward cycle of corruption in this administration. There is no bottom of this pit, and I am tired of falling. We are governed by organized crime.

I stand here now, with new family, and heartbreak, and understand that the battle is won.
Will it be of consequence?
Will they write of my world? Those humans who have gone to new stars, will they remember us?
Will we be free?
I stand, unsteady, as the medicines which hold me awake fade from my mind. My body is exhausted.
But it knows love.
The feeling could grow to infinity in the feeble gravity of this world. Perhaps that is why the hearts of Old Earth could not succeed – they were too heavy, dragged down to stone in the planet’s relentless embrace.
Here, the embrace is gentle.
But my body is tired.
The tiredness is familiar, like my grandparents’ smile. I am thinking now of a den – warm and soft, for long slumber, and protected from the frozen air.
But first, there is urgency.
We have won the battle, but the days of Earth are short, and vicious, and I fear the oppressors’ return.
So, quickly now, attentively, I will tell my story.
Listen, and hope with me that blood will never be shed here again.
