"The Trauma in my Bones"

I need to heal the trauma in my bones
It's why I came here
It's why I tell you this.

I need to heal it for my people
and yours
To turn back the misshapen tides
of the misshapen moons
of the skies which came before, and wrought
in misshapen minds
the greatest myth that ever burnt
and burnt again
the feet of my people
who walked, and died
under its odious banner.

The myth - that my people
and yours
the Earth, and skies,
are not one
but up, and down instead,
high and low,
and, therefore, the misshapen thought proceeds,
should it be that all is pulled up
through misshapen folds, in Time, and love,
extracted to the moons above,
angular and porous that they are,
from the ones below
which are not Real.

And so they are pulled
tides, and burnt feet
until the cities are left
broken and empty
dry of water
waiting for the echo of my bones
to rise up at last
and shatter the porous moons
and speak of burnt feet
and all the charred and muddy pain they've tracked
into your house and mine.

We did an interesting activity today with my students - imagining and writing out our ideal day. The first thing I thought about was getting to the desert, and basking in dark skies. Sometimes I daydream about moving to rural Nevada, building a cabin and observatory, and living my life on sidereal time. But as the saying goes, "wherever you go, there you are." So I don't really think it'd solve all my problems.

Still, I'm grateful for those moments I do get to be under truly dark skies. They are really special and magical and make me feel like life is worth living. 🙂

What does your ideal day look like? What do you find meaningful in life?

I took this photo recently while out on the pacific coast. Thought it'd be appropriate to share it now since we have four human beings on their way to the moon 😯. As someone who wasn't born yet during the Apollo missions, it's a pretty surreal feeling.

One thing I like about the Artemis II crew is their attitude. I'm a STEM educator in my day job, and have a pretty strong (even fervent) belief that space travel can and *should* be done to share the awe and beauty of the vast unknown with *all* of humanity. I think the astronauts headed to the moon right now are doing a pretty good job of embodying that. ☺️

Sadly, that's not what I see in general in tech, and space is no exception. It seems like elon musk & co. want to turn outer space into a playground for the mega rich. And now I guess they want to train superintelligent AIs on orbiting data centers. What could possibly go wrong?

Anyways, it's just been nice to see a small W for humanity. Thanks NASA 🫡

How has everyone else been feeling about the Artemis missions? Have you had time to watch any of the downlinks or interviews with the astronauts?
