A quotation from Robert Louis Stevenson

It is the business of this life to make excuses for others, but none for ourselves. We should be clearly persuaded of our own misconduct, for that is the part of knowledge in which we are most apt to be defective.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) Scottish essayist, novelist, poet
Essay (1880-01/02?), “Reflections and Remarks on Human Life,” § 1.1 “Justice and Justification”

A quotation from Eric Hoffer

Unless a man has talents to make something of himself, freedom is an irksome burden. Of what avail is freedom to choose if the self be ineffectual? We join a mass movement to escape individual responsibility, or, in the words of the ardent young Nazi, “to be free from freedom.” It was not sheer hypocrisy when the rank-and-file Nazis declared themselves not guilty of all the enormities they had committed. They considered themselves cheated and maligned when made to shoulder responsibility for obeying orders. Had they not joined the Nazi movement in order to be free from responsibility?

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983) American writer, philosopher, longshoreman
True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements, Part 2, ch. 5, § 26 (1951)

The Step You Keep Almost Taking

You know what the next move is. You've written it down. You've seen it across your journal entries. You keep almost making it. This isn't about fear or laziness. It's about waiting for readiness that only ever comes through the step itself. So make the step smaller.

A quotation from Montesquieu

I suffer from the disease of writing books and being ashamed of them when they are finished.

Faith in a holy cause is to a considerable extent a substitute for the lost faith in ourselves.

WIST Quotations

I don't think I'm going to keep posting on Mastodon. Maybe I just haven't made enough of an effort and I'm giving up too easily but to be honest, I just don't feel like I have strong enough of a personality right now to ever do what I hoped to come here to: make friends and cheer people up.

When I posted here, replied, liked, interacted here, I didn't feel like I was connecting with someone, I felt like I was trying to infiltrate a community I have no place in. Everyone's already made their friends, everyone's already got their tight-knit groups, and I don't have anything I can offer that would make anyone care in the slightest; I might as well just upkeep my regular blog, since the only extra Mastodon seems to be giving me is insecurity by seeing everyone else just... Being someone worth being.

This note is just to sate anyone's curiosity on why I'm not posting here, if that ever happens.

When Doubt Creeps In

Ask yourself, ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’

‘Don’t think about what you can’t do. Figure out what you can do. Then do it to the best of your ability.’

‘People often ask me how I have the nerve to make cold calls. First, I’m naturally curious, so I genuinely want to learn from other people. Second, people love to be asked about what they do and, generally, are eager to tell their stories.’

‘I was learning. Every day. That is how you stay fresh and motivated. Always be learning. An important lesson, for sure.’

You can do this, I said to myself. You’re smart. You can figure it out. And you can help people by helping them enjoy water.’

I’ve figured out a lot of stuff in my life. I can figure this out. And if it turns out I can’t, at least I can put this idea out there, that you can enjoy things that don’t taste sweet.’

‘… Sometimes, if you think too much about the end, you will never get past the beginning.’

‘It’s okay to admit that you have a problem or that you have no idea what you’re doing.’

‘It’s really important to bring your personal story into the brand identity. People associate the brand with a human being and that person’s story. It adds tremendous meaning and value to them.’

‘You have to have a good sense of your own strongest skills and also be willing to acknowledge where you fall a little short.’

‘Minimize risks. Always.’

#Today I'm getting my act together in the studio, to produce a cover version of a favourite song for my dear love to sing to, in a couple of weeks time at a local show.

There will be no #procrastination, #impostorSyndrome, #selfDoubt or anything remotely #neurodiverse getting in the way, for I have spoken!

Please cheer this frustrated musician along a bit; so much to offer, so long held back by #executive #dysfunction

May nothing get in your way either 🫶 🧠 🎵
