The #SecondContinentalCongress appointed five men, chiefly #ThomasJefferson, #BenjaminFranklin, & #JohnAdams, to draft a #DeclarationOfIndependence on #ThisDayInHistory in 1776. It's worth noting they felt pushed into it by #Lexington & #Concord, and had not wanted independence.
