No Cubs this week, it’s the Group AGM.
For something that there isn’t much to I’ve put in a LOT of prep.
Found out this afternoon one of our District Leads is attending. (I’ve met them more than once.)
So tonight I’m chillin’ … 🥶

At Beavers tonight we used the upcoming Men’s Football World Cup as an excuse to do the International Badge (again*) in one evening so that our newest youngsters could complete a badge in their first Term and so everyone could get outside and play games.
They played Water Football (keep water bottles upright and full), Stiv Heks from Norway (basically Freeze Tig) and NSEW but with Flags instead of Compass Points.
And a quick game of regular football too. We found some unused (still in packaging) mini goals in the cupboard a while back (ordered and forgotten by the previous Leaders) so got to use them for the first time.
We finished with international snacks…and some of the Beavers thought it was just Half Time! 😆
(*As a new Team we are trying to do lots of new stuff with the Colony, and though this was repeating the badge soon after we last did it, we did mostly different activities.)
Something just happened and I’ve come to a realisation…
I think I’ve been secretly been made our Group Scout Leader/Group Lead Volunteer!
✅ Attend every District AGM
✅ Provide Section Cover
✅ Attend all Sections regularly as a Leader
✅ Fundraising
✅ Manage training
✅ Recruit new Leaders and parent helpers
✅ Community outreach
✅ Attempt to Increase Membership
✅ Grounds maintenance
✅ Talk to Group AGM in more than 1 capacity re: multiple topics
✅ Public Relations
When were they planning on telling me?!
Seriously, I seem to pretty much be doing the Role already. Maybe I should just do it officially?

Scout Store is trying to get a rise out of those of us that do the logical and likely original lyrics.
I know “Penguin come to tea” is (seemingly) the popular version of the line in the song, but if you think about the REST of the LYRICS AND the ACTIONS it is clear the song is about a company of penguins on a military parade.
Nothing else about the song is about eating or drinking, it’s about marching and standing to attention.
To me it is clear someone didn’t like that it didn’t rhyme and so they changed it. And then that became popular, probably as it was easier to sing and was sillier.
When I was starting out Scouting and set out to learn some songs someone on a online video had commented that the version they were familiar with was “Have you ever seen a Penguin on Parade?” and from that point on I can’t sing the “Tea” version.
Logic consistency wins it for me.
No Scout Meeting for me to attend tonight. There isn’t one, they are off on a Joint Camp.
Still done some admin and other Leader things though. Always something… 😆
Last night we met as a combined scout section (we had 2 previously but 5/7 in one are 13.5+ so we re-joined them for now) and went to see the knife angel in Ely.

We also had a bit of a forum and some games next to the cathedral.

Tonight we (somehow) managed the double.
For the second time this week, when it looked like thunder storms, it was dry and we had campfires, s’mores and singing.
This time it was our Cubs.
The main difference was the Cubs got to build AND light the fires (several of them) ready for cooking, our Beavers simply did the wood sorting and simple building of one small campfire.
Some of the Pack finally also completed the Backwoods Cooking badge too. If initial programme plans had worked out it was originally up for completion late last year.
Last night at Beavers we were very fortunate with the weather. The thunder showers didn’t materialise and it was pretty much dry for the duration.
Plan A it was then.
As so they helped build a campfire and toasted marshmallows for S’mores.
Then I tried to get them to join in a campfire song. It wasn’t my best performance (far from it), they didn’t really sing much and only some of the actions were done.
But I’ll take that. The older Beavers hadn’t had campfire songs with the previous Leadership Team, and the youngest ones only started a few weeks ago.
I know they enjoyed the night overall.
Small steps, but this is how we save our Group’s Beaver Section. More actual Scouting, outdoors skills and more adventurous activities (like they got at the District Activity day the other weekend).
Some word of mouth and our Colony numbers should rise from their currently critical levels.
That’s our other Plan A with my new Leadership Team.
Interesting use of a visual timetable at Camp.
