2/2 The rest of night was working through parts of the Navigator Staged Badge, so drawing maps, learning about map keys & basic compass use.

A quick quiz then followed before we finished about what equipment is needed for a night hike.

And it seems that no matter how many times I say “night hike” this Term there always is someone who asks “What’s that?”

…So, naturally I can’t resist replying “a hike at night”… 🤡

Last night at Cubs was a Meeting of two distinct parts.

We started by investing 2 of our Group’s Leaders, one from Beavers, the other my new Cub Section colleague.

Conveniently it coincided perfectly with our plans to hold the Investitures of our newest Young People next week, so it demonstrated to them what was involved.⚜️

Scouts last night was camp prep. We’re going away this weekend and a few important things needed to happen last night.

First we have a new mess shelter, 6x3m and we found last night it’s too tall to fully erect in our hut!
We wanted to get it up in the dry so that when we get it onto camp we know how to put it up.

Once the mess shelter had been put away we sat the Scouts down and asked them what they wanted to eat over the weekend.

Armed with a menu we asked them what equipment we’d need to take from the stores, then tasked them with getting everything out and ready for the leaders to pick up on Friday.

Checking our gas supplies we were out of propane, which our new pizza oven uses.
So off to a garage I went after Scouts to source a refilled one.
Also need to get a regulator for it.
The leader that bought the pizza oven did not take gas and regulator types into account 🤦‍♂️

St Patrick’s Day with a chocolate centre.

That was tonight’s Beavers Meeting.

Blindfolded chocolate bar tasting & designing their own chocolate bar filled the middle of proceedings. These activities were meant to happen at a cancelled Meeting earlier in the Term, in case you couldn’t figure out the link.

A themed picture matching relay race started the evening & a 4-step Clover picture drawing and assemble relay followed the confectionary.

And NSEW to end.

Yesterday a posse of local Scouters and Guiders, young and old, attended the first planting of trees at our new Community Orchard.

It was very satisfying having a small band of people we know come join this community project that myself and one of our other Scout Leaders have been involved with from the start, and that everyone in the area can benefit from.

Tonight, after some games, our Scouts did Glow Stick Timelapse Art.

It ranged from the Return of the Mysterons…

Last night my Cub Pack did some rope-making. They used some wool, in three different colours. Took most of the Meeting.
(Photo is my demonstration example.)

Managed to fit in a Human Knot game too.

And with that many of the Pack also completed their Pioneer Badge. Been working away at that for a few Terms now.

I might have acquired four more Tilly lamps…

A job lot of that fateful auction site, slightly more expensive than I’d have liked but all in relatively good nick.

These will accompany me on my greenfield camp with Scouts (#ScoutingUK) and form one of the activities.

Tonight was Mario Night at Beavers…because it’s Mar10 tomorrow.

Naturally I dressed as Luigi. (I was gifted a Luigi Hat recently.)

Later on, the Beavers also could be Luigi if they wanted. They had the option of having a face-painted Mario/Luigi moustache and their photo taken in the Luigi Hat and that would then be sent to their parents afterwards.

Before that however they made model Mario Karts out of recycling. Great fun!

Here’s my demonstration one.

Most weeks I’m fair certain what we’re doing.
Tonight was pencilled in in January, and planned for extensively about a month ago, however my leader that wanted to run it was away on a training course so we pulled the idea for the summer term.

I was going to do lamps and stoves, but one of the other leaders didn’t like that idea.
There was mention of a campfire?
But we didn’t commit to anything.

So I checked OSM before leaving the house and realised we still didn’t have a plan, it was too wet for a fire, and for the first hour it was just myself and one other leader.

We have a camp coming up so I asked each patrol to plan some activities to run in the free time I’ve given them. We then voted on what activities we wanted to do on camp.

Next we go up and played a game of jump over the rope. You may recall I made a monkeys fist on the end of a length or rope so I can swing it around in a circle at feet level and the Scouts have to jump over it. It tires them out, and they love it

After a short break I got them sitting in a circle. I posed the question “tell me a story about a polar bear coming for dinner”, but each Scout could only contribute one word and we can go round and round. They enjoyed this and came up with an interesting story.
Next I asked the to do the same but tell me about ingredients for a cake, so they did.
Then I asked how to make a cock-a-leekie soup - they had no idea and gave me a bunch of interesting items.

I told them that during the three rounds that they had each taken their lived experiences and knowledges, and what had already been said to give me an answer.
I then asked how many of them had used AI chatbots - and belatedly introduced them to “Scout GPT”, stating that they had roughly performed what an AI chatbot does.

We rounded off the evening with a couple of rounds of Werwolves.
