Argh - #scintillatingScotoma   underway! Tooting and tagging the event, as I've found it a handy record-keeping method. I see my last one was Sept 11 2024. So 14mo since my last. Seems about typical.

They're weird things, related to migraine. It lasts about 20 min for me typically. A chunk of my vision currently missing, so I may be mangling this toot.

Painless, just annoying.

#TIL the name of #ScintillatingScotoma

I get that sometimes, usually when I'm stressed or haven't had enough sleep.

The first time it happened I thought I had a detached retina (my scintillating scotoma is a black&white frothy blob just off-centre from my field of view). The optometrist said my retina was fine, and told me it was neurological. He didn't give it a name, tho.

This is what it's like to see through my eyes. I've had scintillating scotoma for decades. It's always there. Sometimes it takes over so much of my vision that I'm essentially blind. Usually, it's something I can work around. I rarely have migraine headaches, but when I do, the blind spots are much worse.

Wah! #scintillatingScotoma underway! I get one of these every year, and this is my night!

Was out but got home just in time. Really obliterates your vision.
Thankfully brief and painless.

While training at the gym, I accidentally looked at the sun reflecting off a windshield and that triggered my scintillating scotoma. I spent the final third of my gym time minus about a third of my vision. A bright circle of electric blue-white light, like sparks from an arc welder, strobed across my field of vision. I was afraid I wouldn’t be ok to ride my bike home, but thankfully it went away after about fifteen minutes. I guess I’m going to have to wear my sunglasses at the gym.

Whenever this strikes, I’m always scared it will not go away. At its worst, I’ve had it 24/7 for four months across about 75% of my vision. Because it’s such an unusual disorder, most folks have no idea how incapacitating it is. I usually get a sort of hangover afterwards which leaves me with increased brain fog.

I suspect it might have been caused by the Irvings spraying DDT over my home a bunch of times when I was a little kid. #ScintillatingScotoma #MigraineAura #NeurologicalCondition #BrainFog #InvisibleDisabilities #IndustrialPoisoning

I went for a walk while the sun was very bright and I ended up with blind spots. But the blind spots didn’t go away. They grew and grew until I realized I could only see half a person walking toward me on the path. Then the blind spots turned into a high intensity halogen strobe light show of a brightness that I haven’t experienced in about twenty years. It’s mostly gone now, thank goodness. Around 2000, I was afflicted with this across about 75% of my vision 24/7. It is utterly debilitating. Sure glad this one acted more like a migraine warning than my usual chronic scintillating scotoma. #migraine #neurological #ScintillatingScotoma #vision #InvisibleDisability https://www.reviewofoptometry.com/article/visual-aura--and-scotomas-what-do-they-indicate
Visual Aura and Scotomas: What Do They Indicate?

A couple of years ago, I wrote about a chronic neurological condition I experience called scintillating scotoma. It is also known as migraine status aura. If you’d like to learn a bit more about it, check out my blog post.

I have a neurological condition called scintillating scotoma. I’ve also had it referred to as migraine status aura. Its kinda like tinnitus of the eyes. (I have tinnitus too). It’s a chronic condition which means I always see sparkling lights in part of my vision. I used to have it so bad that it was like a strobe show plus fireworks 24/7. Sometimes straight lines, like laser beams, would shoot out in front of me and I’d jump away from them. I wasn’t able to read because the light show covered up all the words. I’ve noticed that since having COVID, it’s getting worse again. I can still read, but the light show is creeping larger and larger. It’s worse when I’m in bright environments. I really hope it doesn’t get as bad as it used to be. It is impossible to concentrate with constant built-in fireworks. Right now, it’s more like the sun reflecting off a rippling lake. I wouldn’t be surprised if COVID is what brought this back. #NeurologicalDisorder #ScintillatingScotoma #MigraineAura #COVID #Disability #Blindness

Aside, I am glad you get the aura without a bunch of pain!

Scintillating scotoma at the library! A migraine aura while I was shelf-reading. Didn't lead to pain, it hardly ever does (auras without pain are more common with age). Luckily it's volunteer work, so it didn't matter that I couldn't see the call numbers for a few minutes. The vibrating rainbows are always entertaining out in public lol
