Windmühlen in den Salinen der Stagnone ragen als schlanke Silhouetten über die flachen Lagunen. Ab dem 19. Jhd pumpten ihre hölzernen Flügel über Archimedes-Schrauben Meerwasser in die oberen Becken und trieben die Mühlsteine an, um später das fertige Salz zu zermahlen. Die massiven Steinmauern widerstehen seitdem Wind und Wetter. Heute stehen die meisten Mühlen still, doch ihre klare Linienführung prägt die Landschaft als Denkmal vergangener Technik.

Die Becken der Saline della Laguna sind durch niedrige Mauern aus Stein und Lehm klar voneinander getrennt. Diese Dämme, seit dem 18. Jhd genutzt, leiten das Meerwasser in flache Becken, wo es durch Sonne und Wind konzentriert wird. Die Konstruktion folgt einem präzisen System aus Kanälen, das die Verdunstung optimiert.

Car bogged in an environmentally sensitive area

"A man had attempted to cross a saltpan in the Bowling Green Bay National Park, taking a 3km shortcut. These wide expanses are unique to the North Queensland landscape and are internationally recognised for their significance as a RAMSAR wetland. Getting bogged uproots vegetation, causes soil compaction and erosion, disturbs bird and crustacean populations and has the potential for contamination. It can take years to recover when damaged by 4WDs."
