Here, Van keeps the horn-driven soul from Moondance on “Jackie Wilson Said” and “I Will Be There” while reviving the pastoral space-jazz of Astral Weeks on “Listen to the Lion” and “Almost Independence Day.” On the title track, he contemplates his adopted America, aware that even though “the record company has paid out for the wine,” he's on his own with his pen & paper.
