"Bardem heeft zich ook meermaals uitgesproken voor het lot van de Sahrawi, een volk dat leeft in de Westelijke Sahara – een betwist gebied dat tot 1975 een Spaanse kolonie vormde, en nu bezet wordt door Marokko. Hij produceerde en vertelde de documentaire Sons of the Clouds: The Last Colony (2012) en ondertekende afgelopen jaar een petitie tegen de opnames van Christopher Nolans epos The Odyssey, die deels daar plaatsvonden.

“Al vijftig jaar bezet Marokko de Westelijke Sahara en verdrijft het de Sahrawi-bevolking uit hun steden”, leest de petitie. “Dakhla is daar een van; de Marokkaanse bezetters hebben de stad omgevormd tot een toeristische bestemming en nu tot een filmset, altijd met het doel de Sahrawi-identiteit van de stad uit te wissen.” Het lot van de Westelijke Sahara is ook een thema in The Beloved, waar Bardems personage een film draait die zich daar afspeelt. (De opnames vonden plaats in Fuerteventura.)

Maar bovenal gebruikt Bardem zijn platform om het onrecht in Gaza aan te kaarten. Bij de uitreiking van de Emmy’s, vorig jaar, gaf hij aan dat hij “niet kan werken met iemand die de genocide rechtvaardigt of ondersteunt”."
