Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara and some of his relatives were killed by the JNIM SVBIED that struck his house yesterday morning according to Le Figaro and Jeune Afrique.

Amadou Hampāté Bā - Jawel, commandant In het voetspoor van de vertellers

Het tweede deel van zijn memoires eindigt Amadou Hampāté Bā, die zeker 90 is geworden, rond zijn 33ste, als hij zijn spiritueel leermeester Tierno Bokar verlaat om als ambtenaar in Bamako te gaan werken.

De stijl blijft vriendelijk vertellend vanuit een wijs hart: "Generalisaties, op welk gebied ook, weerspiegelen nooit de werkelijkheid".

Alhoewel hij dus mild van toon blijft -te mild, gok ik, voor dekolonisatie denkers- komt in dit deel de afschuwelijke praktijk van kolonisatie wel meer aan bod. Hij beschrijft het, maar op zo'n toon dat het prettig lezen blijft voor (het nageslacht van de) kolonisatoren. Ik weet niet precies wat ik daar van vind, behalve dan dat alleen de memoires van Bā imho onvoldoende zijn voor een begrip van zelfs alleen de geschiedenis van West-Afrika.

Maar het boek bevat veel pareltjes van wijsheid. Kritiek op macht spreekt mij natuurlijk altijd aan, dus het spreekwoord "Macht graast geen gras, macht eet mensen" blijft me bij, net als een les van Tierno Bokar: "Amadou, denk niet dat macht ooit één nacht heeft doorgebracht met waarheid en recht".

Zo is het.
Ook 100 jaar later en 6.000 km noordelijker.
