Random thought for the day: Are you listening to the music, or are you actually listening to the words? 🎧✍️

I find myself paying way more attention to the lyrics than the actual beat. To me, lyrics carry the raw emotion, stories, and deep meanings almost like poetry or hymns set to a melody. A great beat is nice, but words speak directly to the mind and heart.

You know what I think is bullshit #songwriting advice? "Don't be preachy."

Not only is it bullshit (there are plenty of great songs that preach), it's vapid. Subjective. It's a thought-stopping cliche. It's about as useful advice as "be original"—except no, it's worse. It deters passionate songwriters from writing in support of causes they care about, and at the end of the day, it serves the status quo.

You may not want to alienate your audience, sure. But that doesn't mean you can't preach.

Happy to hear that my brother thoroughly enjoyed his birthday song that I wrote him over the past few days. They called their niece in to listen to it. Sounds like that one's a keeper.
