New funding for SFU Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology to investigate dementia risk

When high school student Advaith Iyer needed help with his directed studies project, he reached out to SFU's Institute for #Neuroscience and #Neurotechnology. He worked with neuroscientist and musician Sarah Faber to design a study to test the effects of playing music on the teenage brain. Check out their interview on #CBC's Early Edition to learn more about their story: https://ow.ly/YBsY50OMnOp #sfuinn #sfuscience #sfu @ar0mcintosh

Congratulations to Advaith Iyer, who won the #SFU Faculty of Science Award at the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair! Iyer worked with Sarah Faber at SFU's Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology to design an experiment to test how playing music affects the brain. https://www.sfu.ca/sfunews/stories/2023/06/highschool-student-partners-with-sfu-music-specialist-to-researc.html #sfuinn #sfuscience #neuroscience
Highschool student partners with SFU music specialist to research the developing teenage brain

When Burnaby eighth grader Advaith S. Iyer decided to participate in the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair (GVRSF) for the first time this spring an ambitious research idea emerged—but he required the tools to engineer it. Seeking to test the cognitive load – the amount of work the brain is doing – associated with playing musical instruments, his high school laboratory equipment was insufficient for his complex experiment. Rather than settle for a simpler study, Iyer’s mother Lakshmi, a health science professional, reached out to SFU’s Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology (INN), where neuroscientist and musician Sarah Faber provided him with the necessary tools and guidance to bring his blueprint to life.

Join the #SFU Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology on May 4 for a seminar from Dr. Tamara Vanderwal who will be presenting "Movies in the magnet: the use of naturalistic conditions to study neural function."
