When you can predict health outcomes based on postcodes, the issue is much more than individual choice.
Mothers and kids in the outer suburbs don't choose to be more obese than those in the inner suburbs. Obesigenic environments drive health inequities.

Postcode lottery means some mothers – and their babies – are more likely to be overweight or obese

Moving from Melbourne’s north to the west brought home to Maddison Dass what researchers have just revealed – there is not equal opportunity for health in Melbourne.

Childhood obesity is complex.
1-in-4 Aussie kids are overweight or obese.
Childhood obesity has tripled since the 1980s; it's significantly higher for kids who grow up in regional areas, those from low-income families, and those living in single-parent households.

Environment, poverty, genetics, housing security, education, town planning and access to healthy food and healthcare all play a massive part in determining health.

We know Australians eat less healthy foods than before; we are also less physically active. Just a reminder that people don't simply choose to become obese or develop chronic diseases. Up to 60% of the factors that drive poor health are outside of an individual's control.
And when it comes to obesity, it's almost impossible for people to get back to a healthy weight without medical intervention.

Yes, people should still strive for achievable weight loss through lifestyle changes. Still, if we want to reduce obesity rates, we need to change the social, economic and environmental conditions that prevent people from making healthy choices in the first place.

Also, it would do everyone a world of good if we ignored toxic attitudes in the health and wellness industry that tell obese people they're failures for not being able to lose 30 kilos with food and exercise.

Dear America

- Food colourings in Fruit Loops are not the problem.
- Seed oils are not the problem
- Carbohydrate is not the problem
- Pasteurised milk is not the problem
- Artificial sweeteners are not the problem

- Entrenched poverty is the problem
- Obesogenic environments are the problem
- Educational inequity is the problem
- The absence of an equitable healthcare system is the problem.
- Growing socioeconomic stratification is the problem.
- 45 years of unbridled neoliberal policy is the problem
