Urban scavengers like spotted hyenas are preventing more than 1,000 metric tons of carbon emissions annually in Ethiopia's second-largest city, according to new research revealing the predators' role as accidental eco-warriors. By consuming organic waste that would otherwise rot, these predators are saving the city of Mekelle over $100,000 USD in waste management costs while reducing the significant sanitation risk associated with routine roadside dumping.

J'y ai repensé de temps en temps, mais je ne savais pas le nom donc j'avais jamais tenté de le retrouver. Jusqu'à ce que ce soit mentionné brièvement par hasard dans une critique d'un jeu de société. Lovebirds: Bonded Pair of White Backed Vultures
Ahhh, vultures. I love them so much. By breaking down bacteria, they make the world a safer and better place. They form loving, monogamous, lifetime bonds, with strong ties to their colony as well. Yet, they face such peril from us humans. In sub Saharan Africa where these vultures live, they are poisoned en masse by poachers, because their overhead circling pinpoints the poachers' illicit kills. And pesticide toxicity, and using vulture parts in traditional medicines, and... well, you get the idea. When humans are left without resources they need and deserve, it affects the whole ecosystem. Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura) have stomach acid so strong they can safely eat carcasses tainted with anthrax, rabies, or tuberculosis. By cleaning up carrion, they prevent disease spread and keep ecosystems healthy.

If you’ve gone looking for raptors on a clear day, your heart has probably leaped at the sight of a large, soaring bird in the distance– perhaps an eagle or osprey. But if it's soaring with its wings raised in a V and making wobbly circles, it's likely a Turkey Vulture. These birds ride thermals in the sky and use their keen sense of smell to find fresh carcasses. They are a consummate scavenger, cleaning up the countryside one bite of their sharply hooked bill at a time, and never mussing a feather on their bald heads.

@Natteheks That reminds me of one of my all-time favourite childrens' books when I was young, "Nature's Smallest Gravedigger". I still have it, so here are some photos from it.

It is all about the life of the American burying beetle, *Nicrophorus americanus*, and, remarkably, it was one in a whole series by Golden Books called Nature's Sanitation Corps.

The book was written by Victoria Cox and Stan Applebaum with illustrations by Dorothea Barlowe and it was published way back in 1974. My Nana gave it to me in 1977 (yes, I'm old).

I still think it's a marvellous book. I like how all the illustrations are accurate depictions of the animals exactly as they are, not simplified down and sanitized for children.
