Lion Rock in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka. I waited as long as I dared to get a sunset picture and then snapped and ran. Apparently elephants sometimes run around at night and don't always notice those little squishy humans in their path.

I almost never use black and white for photos, and I am not sure I can say why I prefer it here- maybe it's about the stillness between these two, in an otherwise frenetic environment. The elephants are almost always on the move, especially in the dry season, when the days are spent foraging and travelling to watering holes to drink and bathe. There is a safety risk to cuddle time, and the hugs don't last as long as this little guy would like. This is a Macaque Monkey working those apposable thumbs to get a drink of water from the sink set up for park visitors to wash their hands. I will note, he did not use those thumbs to turn it off when he was done!

I love this picture. It was a perfect moment from a fantastic trip. I also love it because it's proof that all that safari cowboy stuff that results in crowding and disrupting the animals isn't even the best way to see a magnificent beast like this one. We were not in the huge, loud jeep logjam staking out this guy - we were in the only jeep on the road about a kilometer away - and one of the very few that day to spot a leopard.
