#RYM developers have long claimed that they wouldn't be able to defend the site against AI scraping and DDoS without Cloudflare.
Since a few years ago, there's now the alternative solution of Anubis, yet they haven't adopted it.
Now I'm reading on Lobste.rs that the developer of #Marginalia (a search engine for the small web) has implemented a proof-of-wait challenge that can work even without Javascript (some security folks prefer using browsing without Javascript on):

@neodb / @neodb developers are working on features that will bring it closer to RateYourMusic, such as importing music collection data from there; I am beta testing this feature on eggplant.place and I'm amazed that about 10K of my 16K music entries (spanning 18 years of #RYM) were processed automatically; the rest, for now, still need manual entry, but at least it can go faster than on RYM. Thank you NeoDB! Donate for a better, future-proof project, long live open-source!

#RYM is tied to an Inc. registered in the US. RYM's code is, last I checked, closed-source - which is also why I believe its development has been so slow...
The future can only belong to open-sourced decentralized platforms that can move like nomads away from pressure - into dark web if necessary.

#RYM / @sonemic have made huge progress since the 2000s - when I joined, there was no genre tree, I witnessed much of that growth. They have grown without effectively selling out. However, they have also become reliant on Cloudflare and Google, which are abiding by a regime that seeks to soon outlaw anything vaguely liberal. reCAPTCHA will soon ask for indirect age verification.. Sharifi said they could move servers to Canada, but no one can be ready for what comes next...

I've launched on #RYM an initiative to get folks intetested in contributing to a future RYM-themed NeoDB instance. RYM is closed-source and dependant on US tech, we want to be the opposite of that.

I have resumed my attempt to port my huge #RYM history (7,000+ ratings, just as many wishlisted albums) to NeoDB. When I saw that I can't log into RYM anymore if I don't unblock Cloudflare or googletagmanager... enough is enough!

Edit : C'est l'heure de ma première confession de l'année. J'ai un peu honte mais...j'ai rejoint le côté obscur de la force. Je me suis abonné à Spotify (je commence par un mois gratuit).
